LONDON – After more than two decades of near misses, heartbreak, and rebuilding, Arsenal have reclaimed their place at the summit of English football. The Gunners were officially crowned Premier League champions for the first time since the 2003/04 season following Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on Tuesday night, a result that sealed the title with one game to spare.

It marks the end of a 22-year drought, Arsenal’s longest league title wait since the post-World War II era, and restores the club to the pinnacle of domestic football in commanding fashion.

City entered the crucial midweek fixture knowing only victory would keep their title defence alive and force the race to the final day. Pep Guardiola’s side fell behind in the first half through a composed finish from Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi, and despite a dramatic 95th-minute equaliser from Erling Haaland, they could not find the winner.

The draw left Arsenal on 82 points with a single match remaining, an unassailable lead that confirmed Mikel Arteta’s side as champions. The North London club’s consistency and resilience over the final stretch proved decisive, turning what had looked like another near miss into a historic triumph.

The last time Arsenal lifted the Premier League trophy was in 2003/04, when Arsène Wenger’s legendary “Invincibles” completed the season unbeaten. Since then, the club endured years of rebuilding, near misses, and painful collapses.

In 2007/08, Arsenal held a five-point lead with 12 matches left before falling to third. In 2015/16, they finished runners-up to Leicester City’s fairytale campaign. Under Arteta, the Gunners had finished second in each of the last three seasons, steadily closing the gap on City. This year, they finally went one step further.

The 2025/26 campaign has been defined by defensive solidity and tactical maturity. Arsenal recorded 19 clean sheets, the best defensive record in the league, with goalkeeper David Raya claiming his third consecutive Golden Glove award. The balance between a disciplined backline and a dynamic attack gave Arteta’s side the control needed to sustain a title challenge across 38 games.

The title race swung City’s way in April after Arsenal fell 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium, a result that could have seen the Gunners surrender a 12-point advantage had they beaten Bournemouth earlier that month.

Rather than falter, Arsenal responded with authority. Four consecutive league wins without conceding a goal reignited momentum and piled pressure on the defending champions. City, uncharacteristically, stumbled with a draw against Everton and then dropped further points against Bournemouth, opening the door for Arsenal to seal the title.

Arsenal will officially receive the Premier League trophy on Sunday following their final-day clash against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. The celebrations, however, may not end there.

The Gunners are also preparing for the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest on May 30. A victory in Budapest would complete a historic double and potentially elevate the 2025/26 season to the greatest in the club’s history.

For Arsenal supporters, the triumph represents more than just a trophy. It is validation of a project built on patience, youth development, tactical identity, and belief. After 22 years, the Premier League title is back in North London, and the Gunners look determined to make it count.

A new chapter has begun. Arsenal are champions again.
