“Challenges Politicians To Deliver Beyond Palliatives”
The race for the Oyo South Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections is beginning to take shape, and one aspirant is deliberately shifting the narrative away from the familiar politics of tokenism to a conversation about sustainable development, professional competence and quality representation.
He is Hon. Engr. Dr. Aderemi Abas Oseni, the member representing Ido/Ibarapa East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and a leading candidate for the Oyo South Senatorial seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
At a time when many politicians are still brandishing solar streetlights and food packs as achievements, Hon. Remi Oseni has come out boldly to declare that such interventions, though helpful, cannot be mistaken for governance.
“We are tired of cosmetic governance. We are tired of solar lights. We are tired of bowls. We are tired of the things that are not sustainable. That is not governance,” he declared, in a statement that is already generating conversations across the district.
A Professional In Politics
For Hon. Remi Oseni, his foray into politics was not an accident, nor was it driven by joblessness. It was a conscious decision to bridge what he described as the missing link between professional expertise and governance.
“I have done everything I could do in my professional career. I am a trained structural engineer by profession. I have seen it all, both in design and construction. I have a master’s degree in structural engineering, but I discovered there is a missing link between what my career path is all about and governance, particularly in my environment,” he said.
The federal lawmaker, who has built a successful career in engineering, design, construction and the oil and gas downstream sector, argued that competent professionals must not abandon politics to mediocres.
“Politics is a business of governance. It is not for mediocre people and it is not for jobless people,” Hon. Remi Oseni stated, urging doctors, lawyers, engineers, accountants and other professionals to participate actively in politics because governance affects roads, water, electricity, education, healthcare and every aspect of citizens’ lives.
The Development Agenda: Roads, Health, Electricity
Unlike many aspirants who campaign with promises alone, Hon. Remi Oseni is backing his senatorial ambition with verifiable interventions and a clear, measurable agenda centred on infrastructure, healthcare, electricity, entrepreneurship and accountability.
A key component of his plan is the deployment of heavy-duty construction equipment to support road rehabilitation across Oyo South. He disclosed that a low-bed vehicle is expected to arrive in the constituency before the end of September, while a G14 motor grader has also been ordered for use on local roads within the district.
The initiative, according to him, is designed to reduce dependence on contractors and ensure that road construction and maintenance equipment can be moved quickly to communities requiring urgent attention.
He also revealed that 11 roads have been earmarked for construction within his federal constituency, with procurement processes already underway, while two specialist hospitals are currently under construction, one in Ido and another in Ibarapa East, as part of efforts to improve access to quality healthcare.
In the area of electricity, Hon. Remi Oseni cited interventions including the provision of transformers to underserved communities, support for community development projects and financial assistance for religious institutions, including a Baptist Church project.
‘Potable Water Is Your Right’
At the heart of Remi Oseni’s message is a call for citizens to demand more from their leaders. He argued that governance must go beyond temporary palliatives to deliver lasting solutions.
“Potable water is your right,” he told constituents, urging them to hold elected officials accountable for the quality and sustainability of projects delivered rather than the quantity of items distributed during political gatherings.
He painted a compelling picture of what Nigeria could have been with reliable electricity, noting that many artisans and young entrepreneurs would not have been forced into survival activities such as commercial motorcycle riding if infrastructure had worked.
According to him, welders, carpenters, aluminium fabricators, furniture makers and fashion designers have the capacity to create jobs and contribute significantly to the economy if provided with electricity, roads, water and an enabling environment.
Empowering Artisans, Changing Mindsets
Hon. Aderemi Abas Oseni also devoted considerable attention to artisans, particularly fashion designers and tailors, encouraging them to take pride in their professions and transform their skills into profitable businesses.
He argued that vocational skills should no longer be regarded as inferior occupations, noting that creativity, professionalism, branding and proper customer service could turn small businesses into major employers of labour.
He urged artisans to invest in their workplaces, improve their presentation and treat their businesses with the seriousness associated with major corporate organisations.
2027: APC Versus APC?
On the 2027 political contest, Hon. Remi Oseni, who disclosed that he previously belonged to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before joining the APC, expressed confidence in the electoral strength of his party, describing the forthcoming election as potentially an “APC versus APC” contest.
He said he had received assurances of support from people across political divides and urged constituents to listen to every candidates but judge them by their capacity, antecedents and blueprint for development.
He also warned against internal sabotage within political parties, arguing that anyone with genuine grievances should seek principled resolution or leave rather than remain within the organisation while working against it.
The Big Proposition
Ultimately, Hon. Aderemi Abas Oseni is anchoring his senatorial bid on a simple but powerful proposition: political office must translate into tangible development that puts genuine smiles on the faces of the people.
With his professional background, legislative experience and ongoing constituency interventions, he insists he is not coming empty-handed.
“Quality representation must put smiles on people’s faces,” he said, pledging to prioritise roads, healthcare, electricity, economic empowerment, infrastructure and accountable representation if given the opportunity to represent Oyo South in the Red Chamber.
As consultations continue with party stakeholders and constituents, Hon. Engr. Dr. Aderemi Abas Oseni’s message of sustainable development over cosmetic governance appears to be resonating strongly at the grassroots, positioning him as one of the aspirants to watch in the Oyo South senatorial race.
