Ibadan — The political atmosphere within the Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress was further clarified on Friday as a leading governorship aspirant, Dr. Adewale Kolapo Kareem AKK, declared that the party has not produced a candidate for the 2027 gubernatorial election. The pronouncement, made during the Ibadan South West Local Government APC meeting, seeks to douse growing speculations and re-centre the party on process, cohesion, and collective ownership ahead of a defining electoral cycle.

Speaking directly to party faithful and stakeholders at the meeting, Dr. Kolapo Kareem stated that it remained “unequivocally clear that our party, APC, does not yet have a governorship candidate.” He stressed that such a position can only change when consensus is officially reached and agreed upon by all aspirants, and duly communicated by the party leadership. The statement was framed as both a fact of party procedure and a call for discipline in public commentary.
The intervention comes at a time when political undercurrents within Oyo APC have triggered conversations around endorsement claims and preferred aspirants. By placing emphasis on formal communication from the party leadership, Dr. Kolapo Kareem moved to reassert the supremacy of institutional process over individual posturing. Party observers present at the meeting described the remarks as “stabilising” in a season often characterised by premature declarations.
Beyond procedural clarity, AKK’s message centred heavily on unity and inclusiveness. He told party members that the paramount consideration at this critical time must be inclusiveness in decision-making. According to him, whoever eventually emerges as candidate must be ready to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to advance the development of Oyo State. The charge underscores a growing sentiment that internal cohesion will be the decisive factor in the party’s 2027 performance.

Loyalty to the party formed a major plank of the address. Dr. Kolapo Kareem reaffirmed what he described as his unwavering loyalty to the APC, regardless of the eventual outcome of the governorship race. The pledge was positioned as a principle above ambition, signalling to both supporters and rivals that post-primary stability would not be sacrificed for personal interest. “The party must always come first and its decisions upheld,” he told the gathering.

That call for party supremacy was immediately directed at his own political structure. Dr. Kolapo Kareem urged his supporters and group members to remain calm, focused, and respectful of party processes. The directive appears designed to prevent fragmentation and to model the discipline he is demanding from the broader contest. Political analysts note that how aspirants manage their support bases ahead of primaries often determines the depth of post-primary reconciliation.
In addressing the development question, Dr. Kolapo Kareem tied the internal process to governance outcomes. He insisted that his commitment to the progress and prosperity of Oyo State remains absolute and unwavering. By linking party inclusiveness to state development, he framed the ongoing selection process not as mere power rotation but as a determinant of policy capacity and execution after victory. The message resonated with local government executives present who have long demanded greater input in state-level decisions.
The Ibadan South West meeting provided a strategic platform for the remarks. As one of the most politically dense local governments in the state, consensus from the area often shapes broader zonal sentiment. AKK’s choice to make the declaration there indicates an intention to set a tone for other local government meetings and to pre-empt narratives that could harden positions before negotiations begin.
On the question of personal ambition, Dr. Kolapo Kareem AKK was candid yet measured. He stated that he remains optimistic and hopeful of emerging as the party’s governorship candidate. The phrasing balanced confidence with deference to process, allowing him to sustain momentum among supporters while avoiding the appearance of undermining party mechanisms. It is a rhetorical line several leading aspirants in Oyo APC have adopted as the contest matures.
Party ownership was another recurring theme. “APC belongs to all of us,” AKK declared, adding that members must continue to work collectively for its growth and strengthening across all levels. The statement was interpreted by attendees as a rejection of winner-takes-all politics and an endorsement of expanded stakeholder engagement. Ward and local government executives in particular have pushed for stronger vertical integration within the state chapter.
The emphasis on consensus as the only legitimate pathway to candidacy also serves a tactical purpose. It creates a framework where aspirants are compelled to negotiate rather than campaign against one another in destructive terms. If adopted by the party leadership, the model could reduce litigation, defection, and voter apathy — three factors that have historically weakened the APC in Oyo during general elections.
Reactions from party stakeholders after the meeting suggested the message landed as intended. A local government party officer who requested anonymity said the address “lowered temperature” and reminded members that “no one has been given the ticket in anybody’s bedroom.” Another ward leader noted that the call for inclusiveness would be tested when zoning, lobbying, and concessions begin in earnest.
For the Oyo State APC, the road to 2027 will require managing multiple ambitions without fracturing the platform. Dr. Kolapo Kareem’s intervention contributes a set of principles to that process: no candidate without consensus, no consensus without aspirants’ agreement, no agreement without leadership communication, and no victory without post-primary collaboration. Whether those principles hold will depend on how other aspirants and the state leadership respond in the coming weeks.
As it stands, the party’s governorship ticket remains open. The contest is now officially framed as a process issue rather than a personality battle. And in that framing, Dr. Adewale Kolapo Kareem has positioned inclusiveness, loyalty, and readiness to collaborate as the benchmarks for whoever will eventually fly the APC flag in Oyo State for 2027.
