The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Chief Nyesom Wike, has once again thrown political shame to the winds, openly calling on members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the FCT to abandon their own party and work for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and candidates of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2027 general elections.
Wike, who still parades himself as a leader of the PDP while serving as a Minister in an APC government, made the shameless call on Wednesday at a political stakeholders forum in Abuja, in what political observers have described as the height of anti-party activity and political opportunism.
In a video from the forum, the FCT Minister was seen boasting that all logistics needed for the pro-Tinubu campaign would be provided, confirming fears that public resources may be deployed to fund partisan activities.
“I know all the PDP FCT will support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will support Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda, will support Dr John Gabaya,” Wike declared, to the consternation of genuine PDP members who still believe in party loyalty and ideology.
Mocking his own party, Wike pointed at an Area Council Chairman present at the event as evidence that his so-called Rainbow Coalition is yielding fruits of betrayal.
“He is of PDP, is it not correct? But you see, he has come out mobilizing for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, mobilizing for Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda. All the logistics for our campaign, you will have it. Everything you will have it,” he bragged.
In a further display of political double-dealing, Wike asserted that he has been given two assignments: to deliver both Rivers State and the FCT to President Tinubu in 2027, a statement that has been widely condemned as an open confession of anti-party activities by a man who claims to be a PDP stalwart.
“I was even given two assignments: to coordinate for Rivers State, to make sure Rivers State is delivered to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and to make sure FCT is delivered to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. And with the grace of God, FCT is for Tinubu, Rivers is for Tinubu. We must take this election very, very seriously. And that, and that, and that everybody must take it serious and come out with our Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, and vote for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Wike stated.
Political analysts say Wike’s latest outburst is not surprising, as the former Rivers State Governor has since the 2023 elections turned himself into the chief undertaker of the PDP, working openly to weaken the party from within while negotiating for relevance in the APC government.
In a desperate attempt to buy support, the Minister also dangled appointments before FCT indigenes, promising that they would be included in his administration.
“Let me assure you today, in the next appointment of FCT, you will be included, because you represent a good chunk of Nigerians, and so there should be inclusivity as far as FCT is concerned,” he said.
Observers have asked how a Minister who cannot deliver good governance and infrastructural renewal in the FCT, but is rather obsessed with 2027 politics, can be promising inclusivity, noting that his tenure so far has been characterized by political theatrics, intimidation of perceived opponents, and open romance with the ruling party.
For many Nigerians, Wike’s latest action has once again exposed the PDP’s failure to wield the big stick against anti-party elements who have become liabilities to the party’s survival ahead of 2027.
