…As Asukuna’s Son Takes Father’s Place as Borokinni
The Egbe Borokinni Ti Ile Ibadan Foundation, under the leadership of Borokinni Aare Yusuf Olatunji Lawal Cacatin, Aare Balogun Mayegun of Ibadanland, has held a special intercessional prayer in honour of the late Borokinni Sheikh Sirajudeen Akanni Asukuna, with prominent Islamic clerics, scholars, chieftains, family members and other dignitaries in attendance.
The prayer programme, held on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Ibadan House, Oke Aremo, Ibadan, brought together members of the Borokinni family, Islamic scholars and well-wishers who gathered to pray for the repose of the soul of the late Sheikh and reflect on his life, contributions and legacy. The programme commenced with an opening prayer delivered by Alfa Sulaimon Ajibade.
Delivering a lecture at the event, Khalifat Qozeem Ajisafe Akilapa described the late Borokinni Sheikh Sirajudeen Akanni Asukuna as one of the icons Yoruba people could be proud of, stressing that his life was characterised by tremendous impact, selflessness, love and integrity. He urged the gathering and members of the public to live their lives with the consciousness that death could come at any time.
Khalifat Ajisafe Akilapa further encouraged people to live exemplary lives so that, when they pass away, positive testimonies would be given about them, just as the gathering had assembled to speak positively about the late Sheikh Sirajudeen Akanni Asukuna. He subsequently offered prayers for the repose of the deceased’s soul, asking Almighty God to continue to bless and elevate his soul.
Speaking at the gathering, the President of Borokinni expressed deep emotions over the death of Sheikh Sirajudeen Akanni Asukuna, describing him as a very close associate whom he visited regularly and whose mosque and numerous events he attended.
According to him, “I am not myself since he died. I miss him so much. We were very close, but there is nothing we can do since death took him away.”
He disclosed that plans were underway to construct a mosque in memory of the late Sheikh, assuring that his name would remain permanently attached to the mosque as part of efforts to preserve his legacy. He also pledged continued support for the deceased’s family, stressing that the late Sheikh’s membership number in Borokinni must not be erased.
The President explained that, in continuation of the deceased’s legacy within the organisation, arrangements were being made to formally coronate his son (Alhaji Usman Olamilekan Asukuna) to take his father’s place in Borokinni. He described the move as an important way of ensuring continuity and preserving the family’s long-standing relationship with the organisation.
Also speaking, the BOT Chairman announced that the mosque being planned by the club would be built in Ibadan. He further granted the late Sheikh’s son, who formally joined the club at the event, a two-year waiver as a gesture of support and goodwill.
The BOT Chairman also appealed to members of the family to ensure that the Borokinni Foundation is invited to all major events taking place within the family of the late Sheikh Sirajudeen Akanni Asukuna, emphasising the need to sustain the strong bond between the organisation and the family.
Alhaji Usman Olamilekan Asukuna, son of the deceased, said he deeply misses his father and wishes he could see him again. Speaking in an interview with journalists at the event, he described his late father as a man of great impact who positively touched the lives of many people.
According to him, the lessons he learnt from his father have continued to shape his life to this day. “I miss him so much, and I wish I could see him again. He was a man of impact who touched so many lives positively. The lessons I learnt from him have helped shape my life till today,” he said.
Also speaking, the immediate younger brother of the deceased, Alhaji Mohamadu Saheed Akanji Asukuna, said the circumstances surrounding his brother’s death have made his loss particularly painful, revealing that the deceased died in his hands.
He said the family would greatly miss the deceased’s role in keeping the family united, especially after the loss of their father 24 years ago. “When he died, he died in my hands, and that is what makes me miss him even more. We will miss the way he carried everyone along in the family since we lost our father 24 years ago. He was a man of peace, always ready and responsible whenever family matters arose. The entire Asukuna family will miss him dearly in all ramifications,” he said.
The intercessional prayer served not only as an avenue to pray for the late Sheikh but also as a celebration of his enduring legacy, with speakers and attendees highlighting his virtues, contributions and commitment to humanity. The gathering ended with further prayers for the repose of his soul and blessings upon his family.
