Former mayor of Blanco, Texas, Mike Arnold, has accused some of Nigeria’s wealthiest pastors of enriching themselves while millions of Christians displaced by violence continue to suffer, describing the situation as a moral failure of church leadership.

Speaking during an exclusive interview with Rudolf Okonkwo on 90MinutesAfrica, Arnold argued that Nigeria has become home to what he described as “counterfeit Christians” occupying influential positions, including within the church.

According to him, the country’s prosperity gospel culture has flourished despite the worsening humanitarian crisis facing Christian communities in parts of northern Nigeria.

Arnold, who has been at the centre of international advocacy against what he called Christian genocide in northern Nigeria, stated that Nigeria is home to eight of the world’s ten richest pastors and that their growing wealth has coincided with increasing killings and displacement of Christians.

He contended that rather than using church resources to provide relief for victims of violence, many prominent religious leaders have accumulated personal wealth, including the acquisition of private jets and other luxury assets.

He further argued that the tithes and offerings collected by Nigeria’s richest pastors could significantly support the humanitarian needs of the more than three million displaced Christians if channeled towards relief efforts.

Arnold described the situation as “horrific,” accusing some church leaders of exploiting believers while neglecting those suffering because of their Christian faith.

Despite his criticism, the founder of Africa Arise, expressed optimism that the Christian community could become a force for national transformation if it embraced charity, compassion and practical support for vulnerable people. He maintained that genuine Christian service, rather than personal enrichment, would strengthen both the church and the nation.

Addressing Nigeria’s constitutional and religious framework, Arnold also criticized the operation of Sharia within Nigeria’s federal system.

He argued that any legal system that undermines fundamental human rights is incompatible with a constitutional democracy founded on equal rights and freedoms.

According to him, governments cannot effectively uphold universal human rights while simultaneously accommodating legal systems that he believes conflict with those principles.

“There is no way a government can tolerate Sharia and enforce human rights at the same time. It’s incompatible,” the author of “Epicenter: Nigeria, Radical Islam, and the War for Global Order,” said.

Arnold also warned that continued insecurity in Nigeria could have serious regional and international consequences.

He urged the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump not to overlook the country’s security challenges, claiming that failure to respond could allow armed extremist groups operating in Nigeria to expand their influence. He warned that the situation could deteriorate dramatically if left unchecked.

“If Nigeria loses the support of President Trump, the jihadist groups in the country will fulfill their goal of of hijacking the country and making it a launchpad for global jihadism,” he stated.

On the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, Arnold said he believes Kanu has been unjustly imprisoned and called for his release.

While acknowledging that he could not defend some of Kanu’s past statements, Arnold maintained that Kanu had not personally engaged in acts of violence and argued that his continued incarceration amounted to political oppression.
