Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced plans to reveal his preferred successor in January 2026, marking a significant milestone in the state’s political landscape. Makinde made this declaration during the 11th Omituntun Ramadan lecture, held at the government house arcade in Ibadan, the state capital.
The event, which brought together prominent religious and political leaders, including former Governor Rashidi Ladoja, provided a platform for Makinde to express his gratitude to Muslim leaders for their support and to urge them to continue praying for his administration.

In a lighthearted moment, Makinde jokingly asked popular socialite Abbas Oloko not to remove his billboard at Isale Alfa, saying, “I’m not yet a lame duck. Please leave my billboard at Isale Alfa.” He then reiterated his intention to unveil his successor in January 2026, stating, “In January 2026, we know that political activities will start. I will tell you the picture of the person that will be installed there.”
Makinde’s announcement is significant, given his commitment to influencing the leadership transition in the state. As governor since 2019, Makinde has been instrumental in shaping the state’s policies and direction. His decision to reveal his preferred successor in January 2026 is likely to generate significant interest and speculation among political stakeholders in the state.

It is worth noting that Makinde had previously hinted at supporting a younger candidate, specifying an age range between 50 and 52. However, after engaging with political stakeholders, he broadened the age bracket to between 45 and 55 years.
