After days of intensive consultations and stakeholders’ meetings, leaders of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Oluyole Local Government have settled for experience and tested leadership as they picked Hon. Settle Olaide Popoola as the party’s Chairmanship Candidate for the forthcoming local government elections.
The announcement was made on Thursday afternoon by the incumbent Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Engr. Akeem Olatunji, who is also the APM Candidate for Oluyole Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections.
In a post on his verified Facebook page, Engr. Olatunji stated: _“When there’re 2 good people you love, one must emerge out of the 2 no matter the condition. It’s now official, Hon Settle Olaide is the Chairmanship Candidate of APM in Oluyole LG.”_
Sources within the party revealed that leaders and stakeholders of APM in Oluyole had been meeting for days to deliberate on a candidate capable of sustaining the current developmental strides in the local government and also capable of winning the election convincingly.
The choice of Hon. Settle Olaide Popoola, a former Executive Chairman of Oluyole Local Government who served a single term, was said to have been reached after due consideration of competence, experience, grassroots acceptance, and loyalty to the party.
Party insiders described the emergence as a “consensus built on unity” aimed at ensuring that APM retains Oluyole LG and consolidates on the gains recorded under the present administration.
Engr. Akeem Olatunji, while making the announcement, did not hide his admiration for both contenders but stressed that the interest of the party and the people of Oluyole must come first.
The incumbent Chairman commended all aspirants and stakeholders for their maturity and commitment to the progress of the party. He urged members to rally behind Hon. Settle Olaide to ensure victory for APM at the polls.
The decision aligns with Engr. Olatunji’s broader political strategy of ensuring continuity and stability in Oluyole, even as he prepares to contest for the Oluyole Federal Constituency seat in 2027, says political observers.
Hon. Settle Olaide Popoola is not new to governance in Oluyole. He previously served as Executive Chairman of Oluyole Local Government for a single term, where he was credited with initiating grassroots projects and maintaining peace across the council area.
His return to the ballot is being received with optimism by party members who believe his experience will help deepen development, improve service delivery, and strengthen APM’s hold on the local government.
With the announcement, APM in Oluyole is expected to begin immediate grassroots mobilization ahead of the elections. Party leaders expressed confidence that the combination of Engr. Akeem Olatunji at the federal level and Hon. Settle Olaide at the local government level will deliver a “double victory” for the party in 2027.
The development has also been described as a strategic move to ensure that Oluyole remains a stronghold of the APM, with emphasis on issue-based campaigns, unity, and people-centered governance.
As campaigns begin, all eyes will be on how Hon. Settle Olaide leverages his experience and the party’s structure to connect with voters across the 10 wards of Oluyole Local Government.
