The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vehemently condemned the recent hike in petrol prices, describing it as a harsh blow to the already struggling masses. The price increase, which was implemented by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and various depot owners, has seen pump prices soar to between ₦1,050 and ₦1,150 per litre.
According to Theophilus Ndubuaku, Deputy President of NLC Political Commission, this decision demonstrates a lack of inclusivity and sensitivity towards the Nigerian people. “In saner climes, representatives of workers, the organised private sector, and students would have been consulted before making a decision to increase the fuel price,” Ndubuaku emphasized.
Ndubuaku further lamented that the government’s actions are exacerbating the already dire economic situation, with inflation soaring above 32% and the cost of living becoming increasingly unbearable for many Nigerians. He argued that the government’s policies, which he termed “Tinubunomics,” are untested and lack transparency.
The NLC deputy president also criticized the government’s refusal to subsidize fuel, citing examples of countries like China, which subsidizes many of its goods. He questioned the government’s reluctance to facilitate the conversion to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, a project that has been stalled for years.
Ndubuaku emphasized the need for inclusive governance, citing the example of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who held monthly roundtable discussions with stakeholders to address sensitive issues affecting workers’ welfare. He urged President Bola Tinubu to adopt a similar approach, involving representatives of workers, the private sector, and other stakeholders in decision-making processes.
The NLC’s condemnation of the petrol price hike is a clear indication of the growing discontent among Nigerians towards the government’s economic policies. As the country grapples with rising inflation, poverty, and unemployment, the NLC’s call for inclusive governance and sensitivity towards the masses couldn’t be more timely.
