“Who Is Afraid Of Remi Oseni And Why The Attack?”
The political atmosphere in Oyo South Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections took a dangerous and disturbing dimension yesterday Wednesday 8, 2026 afternoon when the campaign train of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Oyo South Senatorial District, Hon. Engr. Dr. Aderemi Abas Oseni, was attacked by armed political thugs at Agbaje Market in Ibadan North-West Local Government Area.
It was a brazen, cowardly and condemnable act. While the lawmaker was consulting market associations in Agbaje, Ayeye and Idikan, listening to traders, artisans, market men and women as part of his pre-2027 consultations, gunmen invaded the venue and opened fire. Vehicles in his convoy, including a security utility van, were riddled with bullets. Windshields were shattered. Traders scampered for safety. Panic spread across the market.
But the critical question every sane observer is asking today is simple: Who is afraid of Remi Oseni?
Why attack a man whose only offence is going to the people? Why shoot at a man whose only weapon is philanthropy? Why attempt to silence a man whose politics is about service and not violence?
The answer is not far-fetched. The attack was sponsored. It was orchestrated by an opposition that has suddenly realized that their product cannot sell. They are scared. They are jittery. They are afraid because they know that when achievements are placed side by side, they have nothing to market, while Remi Oseni has a mountain of verifiable records.
WHY ARE THEY AFRAID?
They are afraid because Remi Oseni is not a seasonal politician. He is a known philanthropist, a friend of the masses, a man whose giving did not start with politics over 15 years ago. While others were accumulating wealth, Remi Oseni was building the Remi Oseni Foundation for Better Life and Youth Empowerment, awarding scholarships to indigent students up to postgraduate level, paying WAEC fees for over 2000 students, sponsoring over 1,500 JAMB forms, empowering widows, orphans and the vulnerable.
They are afraid because market men and women know him. Just a few weeks ago, he gave a N50 million interest-free grant to traders at Agbeni Amunigun Market in Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West, donated millions of Naira for their secretariat, and with solar lights to secure the market. He has done same for Bodija, for artisans, blacksmiths, welders and iron benders whom he supported with N250 million empowerment.
They are afraid because artisans and traders see him as one of their own. He empowered over 1,000 constituents with tricycles, sewing machines, grinding machines, deep freezers, generating sets, fertilizers and transformers. He launched a N50 million interest-free loan scheme for traders, a N5 billion Development Fund for community projects, and acquired bulldozers, graders and payloaders worth millions to fix community roads by himself.
They are afraid because his achievements as a federal lawmaker dwarf theirs. As member representing Ido/Ibarapa East and the Chairman, House Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Hon. Aderemi Abas Oseni facilitated the construction of health centres, six-classroom blocks at IDC Primary School, installation of solar street lights, construction of Elebu-Orita Merin-Idi Ahun road, Apete-Ariwoola-Aiyegun roads, motorized boreholes, transformers, and job facilitation for over 100 youths. He distributed over 5,000 to 7,000 bags of fertilizers to farmers, launched the Soludero Cooperative Societies, created the young millionaires through his Raising 100 Youth Millionaires Project, and donated N20 million to victims of Bode Market fire and N10 million plus a 500KVA transformer to the Baptist Conference and many more.
With such a record, how do you compete with him? You cannot. So you result to bullets instead of ballots.
THEY DON’T NEED TO ATTACK IF THEY HAVE PERFORMED
This is the crux of the matter. In a democracy, you market your product. You present your scorecard. If the opposition in Oyo South is confident of their performance, if they have touched lives like Remi Oseni has, why are they afraid? Why sponsor thugs to Agbaje Market?
The truth is, politics should be about ideas, records and the ability to serve. As Remi Oseni himself said after the attack: “No attack, intimidation or destruction of campaign materials can determine the choice of the people. At the end of the day, it is the people who will decide. Our duty is to present our records and our vision to them, and their decision must be respected.”
He also declared: “We will continue to go to the people. We will continue to listen and engage peacefully. We will not be intimidated. The people deserve the freedom to choose, and that freedom must be protected.”
Hon. Remi Oseni has rightly called on the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to thoroughly investigate the attack, identify those responsible and bring them to justice. He has also appealed to his supporters to remain calm and not retaliate.
This is statesmanship. Despite having his convoy shot at, despite his vehicles being riddled with bullets, as clearly shown in the picture from the scene where a bullet hole pierced the windshield of his security vehicle, he thanked God that no casualty was recorded and commended security operatives for their swift intervention.
But security agencies must act. Political violence must not be allowed to become the build-up to 2027. The attack at Agbaje Market was not just an attack on Hon. Engr. Dr. Aderemi Abas Oseni. As he rightly noted, “This is a brazen assault on peace, democracy and the constitutional right of every citizen to move freely and participate in political activities without fear or intimidation.”
The people of Oyo South, from Ibarapa East, Ido, Ibadan North-West, Ibadan South-West, Ibadan North, Ibadan South-East, Ibadan North-East and Ibarapa Central, are watching. They know who is working and who is shooting. They know the philanthropist and friend of artisans, market men and women, and they know the sponsors of thugs.
As we approach 2027, let ideas contest, not guns. Let records speak, not bullets. If you are good enough, market your product and leave the people to decide. The people of Oyo South will not be intimidated.
Who is afraid of Remi Oseni? The opposition is. And that is why they attacked. But the more they attack, the more the people love him.
