In a dramatic turn of events, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has been re-elected as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda from the position earlier on Monday. Obasa’s re-election marks a significant comeback, as he was impeached in January 2025 amidst allegations of gross abuse of office and corruption.

Meranda, who had taken over as Speaker after Obasa’s impeachment, had initially been re-elected as Deputy Speaker, a position she held prior to her elevation as Speaker on January 13, 2025. However, in a surprise move, she resigned from the position, paving the way for Obasa’s return.

Obasa’s re-election has been linked to the intervention of the presidency, with reports suggesting that President Bola Tinubu did not support Obasa’s initial impeachment and had sought to give him a “soft landing”. The development has sparked interest, with many speculating about the implications of Obasa’s return on the state’s politics.
As the highest-ranking member of the house, Obasa has been re-elected as Speaker for a third consecutive term. His re-election is expected to have significant implications for the state’s legislative agenda and the dynamics of the assembly.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has also elected other principal officers, including Noheem Adams as the new Majority Leader, Adedamola Kasunmu as the Deputy Majority Leader, Mojeed Fatai as the Chief Whip, and David Setonji as the Deputy Chief Whip.
