Rochas Okorocha, former governor of Imo State has been arrested, by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
EFCC according to Premium Times detained Mr Okorocha at his Unity House private office in Abuja about 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to sources familiar with the matter.
After a five-hour standoff with EFCC operatives who had been following him to the venue, the former governor was arrested. According to our sources, the anti-graft agency had invited the former governor to its Abuja headquarters many times in connection with numerous corruption allegations. Mr Okorocha, who is now a senator, is said to have refused the invitation, which enraged detectives who fanned out to find him.
The politician is being questioned at the EFCC headquarters, and it is unknown if he will be able to return home today. The charges against the senator are vague, but according to our sources, they are linked to alleged colossal corruption during his eight-year term as governor.
Mr Okorocha’s spokesman, Sam Onwuemeodo, could not be reached for comment Tuesday evening.
