The All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Presidency of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu have been thrown into a fresh controversy following an explosive allegation credited to Alwan Hassan, a spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, who reportedly claimed during an interview on Arise Television that some ministers in President Tinubu’s cabinet allegedly paid billions of naira to secure their ministerial appointments.

The allegation, which has gone viral and dominated political discourse since its broadcast on October 23, 2026, has raised serious questions about the motivation behind the loud support of some ministers for President Tinubu’s re-election bid and whether such support is driven by national interest or personal financial investment.

According to the claim attributed to Alwan Hassan, as reported by Gistmania, some ministers allegedly paid billions of naira to secure their appointments and are now in office seeking to recover the money they spent after assuming office, a situation that has sparked outrage among Nigerians who are demanding transparency and accountability in governance.

Alwan Hassan, who spoke as a spokesperson for the APC Presidential Campaign Council, reportedly made the disclosure while responding to questions concerning the appointment of ministers under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, alleging that the process of appointing public officials was monetized and that ministerial slots were literally bought with billions of naira.

The implication of the allegation is far-reaching and has added another dimension to the ongoing debate over political appointments, accountability and the interests behind calls for a second term for President Tinubu.

Political observers have noted that if the allegation is substantiated, it would mean that some ministers who allegedly invested heavily to secure their positions are now supporting President Tinubu’s re-election not out of genuine belief in his Renewed Hope Agenda, but out of desperation to remain in office long enough to recoup their alleged billions, because losing the next election could mean losing the opportunity to recover their money.

The reported remarks have thus raised serious concerns about whether personal financial interests could influence political loyalty, policy decisions, governance and commitment to public service in the current administration.

Stakeholders across party lines have called for an immediate investigation into the allegation, insisting that if ministers truly paid billions to become ministers, Nigerians deserve to know who collected the money, who paid, how much was paid, and what mechanism is being used to recoup the investment while in office.

Critics of the administration have argued that such monetization of public office, if true, undermines the principles of merit, competence, integrity and public trust, which should be the bedrock of ministerial appointments in a democracy.

Others have also questioned the silence of the Presidency and the leadership of the APC since the allegation broke, noting that Alwan Hassan is not an outsider but an insider and a spokesperson of the Presidential Campaign Council, whose words carry weight and should not be dismissed as mere speculation.

As at press time, neither the Presidency nor the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has issued an official response to the allegation, while Alwan Hassan himself is yet to retract or clarify his statement made on Arise TV.

However, the controversy has continued to generate heated reactions across the country, with Nigerians on social media demanding that President Bola Tinubu, who rode to power on the promise of fighting corruption and promoting accountability, must come clean and order a thorough investigation into the alleged billions-for-ministerial-slot scandal to preserve the integrity of his government and reassure Nigerians that ministerial appointments are not for sale.

The alleged remarks have undoubtedly added another dimension to the ongoing national debate over political appointments, accountability, governance and the true interests behind calls for a second term for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
