The Government and people of Oyo State have been thrown into mourning following the passing of the Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Lekan Alabi, a veteran journalist, erudite historian, cultural custodian, and one of the most respected voices in Yoruba socio-political and traditional circles.
The revered Chief, who was a towering figure in journalism, culture, and the Olubadan institution, was buried yesterday, Sunday, August 2, 2026, according to Islamic rites, amid tears, tributes, and a massive turnout of dignitaries, family members, media professionals, and well-wishers.
Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde FNSE, and the Executive Chairman of Egbeda Local Government and ALGON Chairman, Hon. Sanda Sikiru Oyedele, have both paid glowing tributes to the late elder statesman, describing his death as “a monumental loss” to Ibadanland, Oyo State, and Nigeria at large.
In a press statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, on Friday, August 1, 2026, Governor Makinde expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Chief Alabi, noting that the state has lost one of its finest sons whose life embodied wisdom, integrity, and unwavering service to humanity.
“Chief Lekan Alabi was a man of immense wisdom, integrity, and dedication. His voice carried the weight of truth, his counsel was sought by leaders across generations, and his commitment to the preservation of Yoruba culture and values was unwavering,” Governor Makinde stated.
The Governor described the late Abese Olubadan as a distinguished elder statesman, an outstanding public affairs analyst, a cultural icon, and a respected community leader whose invaluable contributions to journalism, culture, and public service transcended the boundaries of Oyo State.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the Alabi family, friends, associates, the Ibadan community, and the entire Oyo State.
“The government and people of Oyo State stand with the Alabi family at this difficult time. May the Almighty grant them strength and comfort, and may Chief Lekan Alabi’s soul rest in perfect peace,” he prayed.
In a separate statement signed by Carew Sherifat Jumoke, Head of Information Unit, Egbeda Local Government, Hon. Sanda Sikiru Oyedele also mourned the passing of the revered Chief, calling it an irreparable loss to Ibadanland and the nation.
Hon. Oyedele eulogized Chief Alabi as an accomplished media guru, exceptional public relations practitioner, erudite historian, and passionate custodian of Yoruba culture whose contributions to the growth and preservation of Ibadan’s rich heritage remain unparalleled.
According to him, the late Abese Olubadan devoted his life to projecting the image of Ibadanland with dignity, preserving its history, and strengthening the revered Olubadan institution through loyalty, wisdom, and selfless service.
“Chief Lekan Alabi was an encyclopedia of history whose wealth of knowledge on Ibadan, Yoruba culture, and Nigeria’s socio-political evolution made him a respected authority. His counsel, writings, and public engagements enriched generations and will continue to inspire those who value excellence, integrity, and cultural preservation,” the ALGON Chairman said.
Hon. Sanda further described the deceased as a bridge-builder, mentor, and friend of the media who related with people from all walks of life without discrimination. He noted that Chief Alabi’s accessibility, humility, and commitment to nurturing younger generations earned him admiration across journalism, communication, traditional institutions, and civil society.
“Although death has silenced his voice, his enduring legacy of scholarship, patriotism, professionalism, mentorship, and cultural advocacy will remain indelible. His passing has created a vacuum that will be difficult to fill,” Hon. Oyedele lamented.
On behalf of political officeholders and the people of Egbeda Local Government, the Chairman extended condolences to the Olubadan Palace, the Alabi family, the people of Ibadanland, and all mourners. He prayed that Almighty Allah forgives the shortcomings of the deceased, grants him Al-Jannatul Firdaus, and gives the family the fortitude to bear the loss.
Chief Lekan Alabi served Ibadanland with distinction and was widely regarded as one of the most articulate defenders of Yoruba tradition, history, and values. His burial yesterday marked the final rites for a man whose life was devoted to truth, culture, and service. His death undoubtedly marks the end of an era for traditional journalism and cultural advocacy in Oyo State.
