Education remains the backbone of any progressive society. It is the foundation upon which innovation, leadership, and sustainable development are built. However, the current state of primary and secondary education in Oyo State paints a deeply troubling picture—one that demands urgent attention and decisive action.

A visit to many public schools across local communities in Oyo State reveals a system in distress. The physical infrastructure is, in many cases, deplorable. School buildings are either dilapidated or completely inadequate for effective learning. Classrooms are overcrowded, poorly ventilated, and sometimes unsafe for both students and teachers.

Beyond infrastructure, there is a glaring absence of functional libraries. In an age where knowledge is rapidly evolving, students are deprived of access to books and learning materials that could broaden their horizons. The lack of well-equipped libraries limits intellectual curiosity and reduces learning to mere rote memorization.
Equally concerning is the absence of innovation and ICT facilities. In today’s digital world, technology is no longer optional—it is essential. Students in many parts of Oyo State are being left behind, with little or no exposure to computers, digital tools, or modern learning systems. This digital gap places them at a significant disadvantage compared to their peers in more developed regions.

Perhaps the most alarming issue is the declining commitment within the system. Reports and observations suggest that in some schools, students spend a significant portion of their day idle, with little structured learning taking place. The apparent lack of motivation among some teachers and school administrators further compounds the problem. When leadership within the school system becomes passive, the entire structure weakens.

The consequences of this neglect are far-reaching. A poorly educated population limits economic growth, increases unemployment, and fuels social challenges. Education should empower, but in its current state, it risks doing the opposite.
However, all hope is not lost. Reviving the education sector in Oyo State requires a multi-dimensional approach:
Government Intervention: Increased funding and strict monitoring of how resources are utilized.
Infrastructure Development: Renovation of existing schools and construction of modern learning facilities.
Teacher Training and Welfare: Motivating educators through better remuneration, training, and accountability systems.
Integration of Technology: Establishing ICT centers and promoting digital literacy.
Community Involvement: Encouraging local communities and private organizations to support schools through partnerships and sponsorships.
Education is too important to be neglected. The future of Oyo State—and indeed Nigeria—depends on the quality of education given to its young population today. It is time for stakeholders at all levels to rise to the occasion and restore the dignity and effectiveness of our educational system.
