The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Chief Nyesom Wike, has challenged opposition political figures to stop being blind to what he described as the visible achievements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, insisting that political differences should not prevent an objective assessment of government performance.

Wike gave the charge during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja on Wednesday, October 14, where he addressed party leaders, state governors and other critical political stakeholders from across the country.

The former Rivers State Governor, who openly described himself as a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said his support for President Tinubu was driven by conviction and national interest, rather than partisan sentiment.

According to him, political affiliation should not prevent any patriotic politician from acknowledging decisions and reforms considered beneficial to the country, adding that opposition politics must not be reduced to blind criticism.

Wike disagreed strongly with opposition narratives portraying the Tinubu administration as lacking direction, arguing that the President has demonstrated rare courage and political will to confront difficult national problems that previous administrations recognised but failed to adequately address.

He noted that genuine leadership is measured by the ability to take tough decisions in the interest of the nation, even when such decisions are not immediately popular, stressing that President Tinubu has shown that capacity since assuming office.

On the contentious issue of national security, the FCT Minister expressed confidence in the administration’s capacity to confront insecurity head-on and highlighted the proposed establishment of state police as a critical reform capable of strengthening the nation’s security architecture.

Wike said the debate over state policing has continued to generate national discourse, particularly around constitutional safeguards, funding, accountability and the relationship between federal and state authorities, but maintained that the reform remains inevitable if Nigeria must effectively tackle insecurity at the grassroots.

The FCT Minister also threw a direct challenge to members of the newly inaugurated Presidential Campaign Council, urging them to demonstrate their political influence through measurable results within their respective areas of responsibility, rather than relying solely on their appointments or political titles.

He warned that membership of the Campaign Council should not be seen as a status symbol, but as a call to work, mobilise and deliver tangible electoral value for the party and the President.

In a comprehensive review of the proceedings prepared by the Media and Publicity Team of the Forum of Chief Executives of Federal Parastatals, FORCEPA, Wike’s intervention was identified as one of the most significant and defining moments of the inauguration.

His remarks formed part of a historic inauguration that brought together political figures from different parties, including Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo and Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, in a rare show of cross-party solidarity.

For the FORCEPA Media and Publicity Team, the inauguration presented a veritable opportunity to document the positions articulated by key political stakeholders on governance, public accountability, security reform and the delicate relationship between political competition and national development.

The Forum maintained that public discussion of government performance should be informed by verifiable policies, measurable outcomes and the lived experiences of Nigerians across different sectors, rather than by partisan propaganda.
