The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ibadan North West State Constituency on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, successfully conducted a peaceful and transparent direct primary election that produced Hon. Jimoh Babatunde Tesleem as the party’s flagbearer for the 2027 House of Assembly race.

However, celebration was briefly marred by a disturbing attack on the candidate’s family hours after the results were announced.

The primary, conducted across all 11 wards of the constituency, witnessed massive turnout of party faithful who voted in an orderly manner under the watch of party stakeholders, INEC officials, and security operatives.

At the end of collation, Hon. Jimoh Babatunde Tesleem polled 1,218 votes to defeat his closest rival, Hon. Adams Yusuff, who garnered 859 votes.

The result was duly announced and certified in the presence of party leaders, observers, and security agents, a development party members described as a testament to internal democracy within the APC.

In a statement issued after the election, the APC Ibadan North West chapter disclosed that at about 8:48pm, while the candidate’s wife, Mrs. Jimoh Bukola Folashade, was driving home with their 6-year-old daughter, Jimoh Yasirah Aderonke, along Jericho Road, three unidentified men intercepted their vehicle.

According to eyewitness accounts, one of the assailants was armed with a locally made pistol while the other two wielded cutlasses. The men attempted to force the vehicle to a stop.

By divine intervention, Mrs. Jimoh and her daughter escaped unhurt with no physical injuries sustained.

The APC Ibadan North West family has condemned the attack in the strongest terms, describing it as “dastardly, cowardly and anti-democratic.”

“We are relieved that no lives were lost. However, we will not tolerate any attempt to intimidate our members or their families,” the party stated.

The party called on the Oyo State Commissioner of Police and all relevant security agencies to immediately commence a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law.

While congratulating Hon. Jimoh Babatunde Tesleem on his resounding victory, the party urged all members and supporters to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding.

“Violence has no place in our democracy. This victory belongs to all APC members in Ibadan North West. We must now unite and work together to ensure victory for our party in 2027,” the statement added.

The peaceful conduct of the primary, despite the unfortunate incident afterward, reflects growing maturity within the APC in Oyo State as the party prepares to reclaim strategic seats ahead of the 2027 general elections.
