IBADAN, Oyo State – In a move aimed at strengthening opposition cooperation and deepening grassroots engagement ahead of future elections, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Allied Peoples’ Movement, APM, have announced plans to hold a historic Unity Mega Rally in Ibadan on Thursday, May 14, 2026.
The rally, scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. at the iconic Mapo Hall, is designed to showcase solidarity between the two parties, reinforce mutual understanding, and demonstrate a shared commitment to good governance, inclusive politics, and people-oriented leadership in Oyo State and beyond.
However, organizers have moved swiftly to dispel speculation surrounding the event, making it clear that the rally will not serve as a platform for unveiling or endorsing any candidate for elective office.
“The organizers wish to categorically clarify that no candidate will be unveiled at the event. Contrary to rumours circulating in some quarters, the Ibadan rally is not intended for the presentation or endorsement of any individual for elective office,” the joint statement read.
According to the Media and Publicity Committee of the Grand Alliance Unity Mega Rally, both parties have agreed that any candidate who may eventually emerge on the platform of the coalition will do so strictly through legal, democratic primaries and within the framework of a mutually agreed timetable to be announced at the appropriate time.
“Until such processes are formally activated and concluded, there shall be no unveiling, announcement, or endorsement of candidates by the alliance or any of its affiliated structures,” the statement emphasized.
The leadership of the PDP and APM said the decision reflects their shared commitment to transparency, internal democracy, fairness, and respect for due process. They noted that credible democratic procedures remain the strongest foundation for sustainable political cooperation and electoral legitimacy, especially at a time when voters are demanding accountability and inclusiveness from political actors.
The Unity Mega Rally is therefore positioned as a platform for strengthening inter-party cooperation, mobilizing supporters across Oyo State and beyond, promoting peaceful political participation, and reinforcing the collective resolve to build a more responsive and people-driven political alternative.
Political observers say the rally signals a deliberate effort by the two parties to consolidate support bases, harmonize structures, and present a united front capable of challenging the status quo in subsequent electoral contests. The event is also expected to provide an opportunity for party faithful, youth groups, women organizations, civil society stakeholders, and supporters of democratic ideals to engage directly with the coalition’s vision.
Members of the public have been encouraged to attend the rally peacefully and responsibly, as the alliance seeks to demonstrate that political collaboration can thrive within the bounds of democratic norms and due process.
The announcement comes amid growing conversations around coalition-building and opposition alignment in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
