Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has shed light on the significant influence wielded by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. In an interview with Arise TV, Momodu attributed Wike’s considerable power to the backing of the ruling government, stating that without this support, Wike’s authority would be substantially diminished.
Momodu emphasized that when a government possesses and exercises all state powers against the opposition, the opposition’s ability to act is severely limited. He noted that this is particularly concerning, as it undermines the democratic principles of Nigeria. According to Momodu, everyone acknowledges that Wike’s power is largely derived from his connection to the ruling government.
Momodu expressed his disappointment and worry that the current civilian administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, is making it increasingly challenging for opposition parties to operate effectively. He clarified that he holds no personal grievances against the government but is concerned about the actions of some of the president’s allies, which are hindering the opposition’s ability to thrive.
As someone who actively fought for democracy in the past, Momodu lamented that Nigeria has come under a civilian administration that is making it difficult for the opposition to survive. He emphasized that the government’s actions are misbehaving and making it challenging for the opposition to operate.
In a related development, Momodu previously explained Wike’s hesitation to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that Wike’s current influence is being bolstered by his ties to the ruling APC, allowing him to empower allies and destabilize the PDP.
