As the 2027 general election in Nigeria approaches with just eleven weeks remaining, the political battle for the soul of the nation has taken a new dimension, with economic realities, rather than political alignments, emerging as the ultimate determinant of victory. This was the position of Chief Dele Momodu, Deputy Director-General, Media and Communications of the African Democratic Congress, ADC Presidential Campaign, who has declared that hunger and hardship, not political permutations, will defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 if the living conditions of Nigerians do not improve.
Speaking during an explosive appearance on Channels Television’s flagship political programme, Politics Today, monitored in Lagos, the veteran journalist, publisher and ADC chieftain delivered a blunt assessment of the current administration and the factors that will shape the forthcoming presidential election.
According to Dele Momodu, no amount of political engineering, including the much-talked-about harvest of governors and high-profile defections into the All Progressives Congress, APC, can rescue President Tinubu at the polls if Nigerians continue to grapple with hunger, inflation and economic hardship.
“There is no permutation that will beat hunger. That is the truth. Bola Tinubu can bring all the governors in the world, and I just told you we saw it in Osun,” Momodu declared, referencing the 2022 Osun governorship election where the APC, despite being the ruling party at the centre, lost to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, due to grassroots dissatisfaction.
Momodu argued that the 2027 presidential election will not be won on the pages of newspapers or through elaborate political permutations in Abuja, but in the markets, on the streets, and in the homes where Nigerians are confronting the daily realities of cost of living crisis, food inflation and dwindling purchasing power.
The ADC campaign spokesman did not stop at the hunger narrative, as he also launched a scathing attack on what he described as lack of sincerity and sycophancy within the current administration, alleging that those managing the nation’s economy are not telling President Tinubu the truth about the state of the nation.
“What is lacking in this government is that sincerity. Everything is about one man. The people who are running our economy today have to tell Nigerians only what they think the president wants to hear. They are not telling him the truth, and when tomorrow comes, he will realise it,” Momodu said.
This statement by Momodu has been interpreted by political analysts as a direct indictment of the economic management team of President Tinubu, suggesting that the President is being shielded from the harsh realities on the ground by aides who are more interested in pleasing him than in confronting the economic challenges facing millions of Nigerians.
According to Momodu, this culture of insincerity and eye-service is dangerous for governance, as it prevents the President from making informed decisions that could alleviate the suffering of the people and potentially save his administration from electoral defeat in 2027.
Reacting to the recent comments by Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on the need for energy and stamina in a presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election, Dele Momodu dismissed physical strength as a yardstick for presidential leadership, insisting that the job of a President requires mental capacity, not athletic prowess.
“The job of a president is not to be a high jumper or long jumper. It is to think; it is to have clear vision; it is to have experience; it is to have exposure and be tolerant,” Momodu stated.
Momodu, who is a staunch supporter of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s political family but now plays a key role in the ADC coalition, maintained that effective leadership is fundamentally about the ability to manage people and resources, rather than physical stamina or youthful exuberance.
“Leadership is about managing people and resources,” he added, in what many see as a subtle jab at those who are promoting age and physical fitness as campaign issues for 2027.
Political observers believe that Momodu’s intervention is significant because it shifts the 2027 discourse from defections and permutations to performance and living conditions, a terrain where the current administration is considered vulnerable due to rising food prices and economic hardship.
As the nation counts down eleven weeks to the 2027 general election, Momodu’s warning shot is clear: if hunger remains, no political permutation can save the incumbent, and if insincerity persists in government, the President may only realise the truth when it is too late at the polls.
