In a dramatic confirmation of Naija TODAY News Exclusive report of July 18th, 2026, the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Oyo State, Honourable Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi, has resigned his appointment with immediate effect.
Ogunwuyi announced his resignation in a letter dated Monday, October 12, 2026, and addressed to Governor Seyi Makinde, bringing to an end his over seven-year stint as the administrative engine of the Makinde administration.
In the letter, Ogunwuyi wrote: “I respectfully write to resign my appointment as Chief of Staff to the Governor of Oyo State, with effect from today, 12th October, 2026.”
Reflecting on his time in government, the former Chief of Staff described his service to the administration and the good people of Oyo State as a great honour and a deeply fulfilling experience.
“Serving the Government and the good people of Oyo State has been a great honour. It has been deeply fulfilling to be part of the exceptional team that has worked relentlessly to deliver the remarkable achievements of this administration,” he stated.
He added that he remained proud of the collective efforts of the administration to advance the growth, development and prosperity of Oyo State, stressing that he was leaving with profound gratitude and confidence in the continued progress of the state.
“As I take this decision, I do so with profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve, with confidence in the continued progress of Oyo State,” the letter further read.
Ogunwuyi concluded by expressing his highest esteem for Governor Makinde and reaffirming his loyalty to Oyo State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The resignation, which has sent shockwaves across the political landscape of Oyo State, comes barely three months after Naija TODAY News exclusively reported the political silence and quiet distancing of the Chief of Staff from Governor Makinde’s camp ahead of the 2027 general election.
It will be recalled that on July 18, 2026, Naija TODAY News in an Exclusive Report titled “Makinde Chief Of Staff, Segun Ogunwuyi’s Political Silence Sparks Defection Rumours In Makinde’s Camp Ahead Of 2027”, had revealed that Otunba Ogunwuyi had become conspicuously absent from key activities of the PDP-APM coalition.
Multiple sources within the coalition and government circles had told Naija TODAY News at the time that Ogunwuyi, who also harboured gubernatorial ambition, became unsettled following the conclusion of the coalition’s consensus arrangement that produced Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi as governorship candidate, with the Deputy Governorship slot zoned to Ogbomoso and given to Hon. Open-Salawu, a fellow indigene of Ogbomoso zone.
The development, according to insiders, created deep political discomfort for Ogunwuyi, who was considered the most senior political stakeholder from Ogbomoso within the Makinde government.
The rumours gained traction when the Chief of Staff was conspicuously absent from the coalition’s Thank-You Tour to Ogbomoso, his own political base and senatorial district, despite the prominent presence of Hon. Open-Salawu, the new deputy pick from the same zone.
Since that event, Ogunwuyi had maintained an unusually low public profile, declining to make political statements or appear at key coalition functions, a silence Naija TODAY News described as “deafening for a man once known as the Governor’s most visible lieutenant.”
Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi has, since 2019, been regarded as one of the strongest pillars and leading beneficiaries of the Makinde administration.
A technocrat and politician with deep roots in Ogbomoso politics, he served as Executive Assistant to the Governor on Investment before his elevation as the pioneer Director-General of the Oyo State Investment and Public-Private Partnership Agency (OYSIPPPA), where he drove landmark initiatives such as the Alternative Project Funding Approach (APFA), which facilitated major infrastructure projects across the state.
In recognition of his loyalty and service, Governor Makinde appointed him Chief of Staff in 2021, a position he retained after the Governor’s re-election in 2023. He has since functioned as the administrative engine of the government, signing key directives and coordinating policy implementation.
Otunba Ogunwuyi’s pedigree as a former member of the Oyo State House of Assembly (2011-2015), former member of the House of Representatives for Ogbomoso North/South/Oriire Federal Constituency (2015-2019), certified accountant, MBA holder from Obafemi Awolowo University, and Otunba Mayeloye of Ijeru Kingdom, makes him a formidable political asset in Ogbomoso and beyond.
Political analysts describe his resignation as a major crack in Governor Makinde’s inner circle and a significant political loss for the Makinde camp, especially in Ogbomoso zone where power balancing will be critical in the 2027 governorship election.
His exit is expected to reshape alliances, alter zoning calculations and impact the cohesion of the PDP-APM coalition ahead of 2027.
As of press time, Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, is yet to issue an official statement accepting the resignation or announcing a replacement.
However, with today’s development, Naija TODAY News Exclusive report of July 18th, 2026 has been vindicated, confirming that all was indeed not well within the Governor’s camp.
All eyes are now on Ogbomoso and Ibadan as stakeholders await Otunba Ogunwuyi’s next political move ahead of 2027.
