Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has predicted a landslide victory for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in the 2027 general elections, declaring that God and the people of Oyo State are firmly behind the party.
Makinde made the declaration on Monday at the Boye Nation/JAF Movement Mega Concert held at the Open Tennis Court of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan, where he formally received thousands of defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) into the APM.
The defectors, drawn from various local government areas across the state, were led by Ajiboye Sangogade, popularly known as Boye Nation, who is a Personal Assistant and loyalist to former Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu.
Speaking at the event, Governor Makinde said the massive defection was a clear indication that victory for the APM in 2027 was only a matter of time. He stated that God had already approved the movement, noting the rainfall witnessed during the event as symbolic.
“God has signed off on what we are doing, and that is why it is raining. Today, we are welcoming thousands of APC members into the Allied People’s Movement, and this shows that our victory is only a matter of time. We will win massively in all elections in 2027,” Makinde said.
The governor also took a swipe at the APC governorship candidate in the state, Barrister Sharafadeen Alli, advising him to concentrate on contesting against the APM governorship candidate, Bimbo Adekanmbi, rather than criticising his administration.
Makinde reiterated his earlier description of Alli as a mediocre lawyer, arguing that the people of Oyo State would not allow the state to regress. He challenged Alli to convince the electorate to support him despite what he described as hardship inflicted by his party at the federal level.
He said, “This is why I encourage the APC governorship candidate, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, to focus his energy on convincing the people of Oyo State to support him despite the hardship brought upon them by his party. He should focus on the APM governorship candidate, Bimbo Adekanmbi, instead of attacking our administration.”
Comparing professional credentials, Makinde said he is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and that Adekanmbi is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, the highest qualification in the accounting profession, while Alli has no professional recognition.
“Ask Alli if he has any recognition in his own profession. He is not a Senior Advocate of Nigeria,” the governor stated.
Makinde also responded to criticisms that his administration powers streetlights with diesel generators despite being an engineer. He said the blame should be placed on the APC-led Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who he recalled promised during campaigns that he should not be re-elected if he failed to fix Nigeria’s electricity problem within four years.
“On powering streetlights with diesel generators, remind them that their leader was the one who said that if he didn’t fix Nigeria’s electricity problem within his first four years, no one should vote for him again. If he had fulfilled that promise, we would not be powering streetlights with diesel,” Makinde added.
The concert, themed “Young, United, Unstoppable (YUU)”, also featured electrifying performances by prominent Fuji artistes including Alhaji Taye Currency, Alhaji Tiri Leather, Babatunmise, Ododo Emi, Ajao Samson Ajeseun Band and Aare Rasaq Ayanfe, among others.
Top government officials attended the event, including the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi; serving members of the House of Representatives and the Oyo State House of Assembly; commissioners; and other government functionaries.
Also present were the three APM senatorial candidates, Hon. Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide Odidiomo (Oyo South), Hon. Shina Peller (Oyo North) and Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo (Oyo Central), as well as 14 APM House of Representatives candidates, 32 House of Assembly candidates and 33 Local Government Chairmanship candidates.
