Say Oyo APC Delivered All 33 LGAs With Highest Margin In South-West Yet Unfairly Treated
Fresh indications have emerged that the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, is set to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) today, as his Personal Assistant and close ally, Ajiboye Sangogade Akande, popularly known as “Boye Nation”, will formally decamp to the Allied People’s Movement (APM) today in Ibadan at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba.
The development, which political watchers describe as a clear dress rehearsal for Adelabu’s imminent defection, has rekindled the controversy surrounding his alleged anti-party activities during the 2023 general elections and the alleged unfair treatment of the Oyo State chapter of the APC by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
It would be recalled that this story was first published on February 20, 2024, when a chieftain of the APC in Oyo State, Kehinde Olaosebikan, accused Chief Adelabu of working against the election of President Tinubu.
Olaosebikan, who served as the Chief Press Secretary to former Governor Lam Adesina and was the Coordinator of Media and Publicity for the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council in Oyo State and the South-West, had lamented that the Oyo APC was being treated unfairly despite delivering all 33 Local Government Areas with the highest votes and margin in the entire South-West for President Tinubu.
According to Olaosebikan, the APC in Oyo mobilised the highest number of people for a presidential campaign in the history of the state.
“Yes, we made this happen. We mobilised and gathered the highest number of people for a presidential campaign in the history of Oyo State. It was unprecedented. Having strenuously worked round the clock campaigning for our presidential candidate in Oyo State, APC was able to deliver all the 33 local government areas in the state with the highest votes and margin in the entire South-West to President Tinubu,” he had said.
Records of the 2023 presidential election showed that Tinubu polled 449,884 votes in Oyo State to defeat Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the PDP who scored 182,977 votes and Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party who secured 99,110 votes.
But, in what Olaosebikan described as the most unfair arrangement and blatant injustice to the APC family in Oyo State, the person rewarded with the ministerial slot for Oyo State was Chief Adebayo Adelabu, who had decamped to Accord Party to secure a governorship ticket in the 2023 election.
“But sadly, and in the most unfair arrangements, the person representing Oyo State in the Tinubu cabinet today was the leader and governorship candidate of Accord, one of the parties that gave Tinubu’s candidacy the toughest opposition in the media, on the streets and during the polls,” Olaosebikan had alleged.
He further alleged that leaders of Accord Party in the state directed their members to vote for their own presidential candidate and not for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, meaning Adelabu not only worked against the APC but also voted against the President.
Political observers in Ibadan now say that today’s decamping ceremony at Adamasingba by Boye Nation, Adelabu’s Personal Assistant and political ally, is a confirmation that Adelabu himself will decamp and work for APM.
They argue that despite working against the APC in 2023, President Tinubu treated the Oyo APC chapter unfairly by giving the man who worked against the party the ministerial slot as Minister of Power.
With Adelabu’s camp now moving en masse to APM, stakeholders are asking whether the Tinubu administration will continue to tolerate what they describe as serial betrayal and anti-party politics.
As of the time of filing this report, supporters of Boye Nation have already converged at Adamasingba for the official declaration into APM, a move seen as the final exit of Adelabu from the APC he allegedly betrayed in 2023.
