Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on Thursday declared that local government councils in the state are fully functional, autonomous, and delivering tangible infrastructure projects that are directly improving the lives of residents.

The Governor made this assertion while commissioning a 2-kilometre Bodija International Market Road, a newly constructed ultra-modern Fire Service Station, lock-up shops, and a car park at Bodija International Market, Ibadan. The projects were executed by the Ibadan North Local Government Council under the leadership of Hon. Oluwaseun Olufade.

In a significant gesture, Governor Makinde named the newly commissioned car park after the legendary Ibadan warlord, Balogun Oderinlo, in recognition of his historic contributions to the city.

Addressing a large gathering of traders, market leaders, political stakeholders, and residents, Governor Makinde described the projects as “clear evidence that local governments in Oyo State are effectively discharging their constitutional responsibilities without interference.”

He stated that the interventions were deliberately designed to address long-standing challenges at the market, ease vehicular movement, boost commercial activities, improve the ease of doing business, and ultimately strengthen the state’s economy.

“When local governments are allowed to function and are properly funded, the results are visible. What we are commissioning today in Bodija is proof that governance is working at the grassroots,” Makinde said.

The Governor commended Hon. Olufade for his commitment to service delivery and urged traders and residents to continue supporting the administration’s vision for sustainable development. He further assured that his successor would continue to facilitate more infrastructure projects across the state.

In his welcome address, the Executive Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, Hon. Oluwaseun Olufade, expressed appreciation to Governor Makinde for providing the enabling environment that allowed the council to successfully deliver the projects.

He noted that the new road would improve transportation, the fire station would enhance public safety, and the shops and car park would increase commercial activities and revenue generation.

“These projects are a testament to Governor Makinde’s enduring commitment to improving the lives of the people of Oyo State. Bodija International Market is now better positioned as one of the leading commercial hubs in Nigeria,” Olufade said.

One of the project contractors, Mr. Adekunle Akinpelu, described the construction of the fire station as a landmark achievement. He recalled that past fire incidents at Bodija had led to huge losses of property and lives, and expressed confidence that the new facility would improve emergency response and prevent future tragedies.

The Chairman of Bodija Market and the Otun Iyaloja of Bodija Market, Alhaja Oyebamiji, also thanked the Governor for approving the projects. They emphasized that the infrastructure would provide greater comfort, safety, and convenience for traders and customers while promoting economic growth.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Babaloja of Bodija Market, Alhaji Ismael Jimoh, expressed gratitude to the state government for ensuring ease of doing business and for prioritizing traders’ welfare.
