IBADAN — The gubernatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State, Oloye Adegboyega Taofeek Adegoke, FCA, on Friday paid a sympathy visit to traders and victims of the devastating fire outbreak at Bode Market in Ibadan, describing the incident as a painful blow to the economic lifeline of Ibadanland.

The inferno, which gutted several shops and destroyed goods worth millions of naira, has left many hardworking traders in distress and uncertain about the future of their businesses.

Speaking during the visit, Chief Adegboyega Taofeek Adegoke expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, noting that Bode Market, situated in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area, holds personal significance to him as an Ibadan son and as Head of Abosé Compound, Gege.

“This is not just a market fire. It is a loss to families, to livelihoods, and to the commercial heartbeat of Ibadan,” Chief Adegoke said. “I am here to identify with our people, to share in your grief, and to see firsthand the extent of the damage so that we can determine how best to support you in this trying time.”

The ADC flag-bearer was accompanied by the Oyo State Chairman-Elect of the ADC, key party leaders, and members of Team SOLUTIONS. Their presence at the scene drew commendation from traders and residents, who described the visit as a demonstration of compassion and leadership that transcends politics.

As Head of Abosé Compound, Chief Adegoke’s engagement resonated strongly with the host community. Many traders noted that his visit brought a sense of hope and reassurance amid the ruins.

Market leaders and community heads who received the delegation expressed appreciation to all individuals and organizations that had shown concern since the fire incident. They disclosed that plans were already underway by the market association and host community to commence the rebuilding of affected shops through collective effort.

While stating that they were not requesting direct government intervention for the reconstruction of the structures, the leaders appealed for support from government, corporate organizations, philanthropists, and well-meaning individuals to help affected traders restock their goods and restore their means of livelihood.

Chief Adegoke assured the victims that he would explore sustainable ways to support them, stressing that no trader should be left behind in the recovery process.

“With collective effort, community spirit, and by the grace of God, we will overcome this setback,” he said. “I am committed to ensuring that our traders bounce back stronger. Ibadan people are resilient, and we will rebuild Bode Market together.”

He further charged relevant stakeholders to prioritise fire prevention measures and modern market infrastructure to safeguard traders’ investments across the state.

The ADC candidate reiterated his broader commitment to the welfare of Oyo State people, saying his administration, if elected, would focus on economic empowerment, small business protection, and disaster response mechanisms that put citizens first.

The visit was widely regarded as a reflection of Chief Adegoke’s enduring commitment to Ibadanland and his people-centered approach to governance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
