IBADAN, Oyo State – The political atmosphere in Oyo State and across Nigeria shifted to a new phase on Thursday as His Excellency, Governor Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, FNSE, officially declared his intention to contest the presidency in 2027 under the banner of the Allied Peoples’ Movement, APM. The declaration, made at the Unity Mega Rally held at the iconic Mapo Hall, Ibadan, marked a defining moment for opposition politics and national realignment ahead of the next general elections.

In response to this development, former Oyo State governorship aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Otunba Oluseye Nathaniel Oladosu Opatoki, has issued a statement of congratulations and commendation, describing the declaration and the PDP-APM alliance as a courageous step toward safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and restoring hope to the electorate.

In his congratulatory message, Otunba Oluseye Opatoki applauded Governor Seyi Makinde for his boldness, consistency, and commitment to the principles of inclusive governance. He noted that the Governor’s decision to throw his hat into the presidential ring at this critical juncture reflects a deep understanding of the challenges facing Nigeria and the urgent need for experienced, performance-driven leadership at the federal level.

“Today’s declaration by His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde FNSE, is not merely a personal political milestone. It is a national call to action,” Otunba Oluseye Opatoki stated.
“At a time when Nigerians are yearning for credible alternatives, for leadership that is accountable, and for a political system that guarantees a level playing field, Governor Seyi Makinde has risen to the occasion. I congratulate him on this historic step and commend his courage to lead from the front.”

The former governorship aspirant further commended the formalization of the alliance between the PDP and the APM, describing it as a strategic and timely intervention aimed at consolidating opposition forces and presenting Nigerians with a united front ahead of 2027.

Otunba Oluseye Opatoki also praised the successful hosting of the Unity Mega Rally at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, noting that the turnout and the quality of engagement demonstrated the readiness of the people of Oyo State and beyond to participate actively in shaping the future of the country.

“The rally at Mapo Hall was more than a political gathering. It was a statement of unity, purpose, and resolve. It showed that when leaders prioritize the interest of the people over personal ambition, the people will respond with energy and commitment,” he said.

He highlighted Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for Nigerians to rise above political apathy and become active participants in the democratic process. According to him, that message resonates with the aspirations of millions of citizens who have grown weary of exclusionary politics and are seeking a system that works for all.

Otunba Oluseye Opatoki aligned himself with Governor Makinde’s position that Nigeria must resist any attempt to slide into a one-party state. He stressed that a healthy democracy thrives on competition, dialogue, and the free expression of alternative ideas.

“Nigeria’s democracy is at a crossroads. The choice before us in 2027 is between continuity of exclusion and the beginning of a national reset. Governor Seyi Makinde’s declaration provides that opportunity for a reset. It is an opportunity to elect a leader with a proven record of delivering infrastructure, improving education and healthcare, and managing public resources with transparency,” he added.

He urged political actors across party lines to focus on issue-based campaigns, to avoid divisive rhetoric, and to engage the electorate on policies that address unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship, and infrastructural deficits.

While congratulating Governor Seyi Makinde and the leadership of the PDP-APM alliance, Otunba Oluseye Oladosu Opatoki reaffirmed his own commitment to the progress of Oyo State and the advancement of democratic values. He noted that his political journey has always been guided by the desire to see Oyo and Nigeria governed by leaders who prioritize service, integrity, and the welfare of the people.

“As someone who has walked the path of public service aspiration, I understand the weight of the responsibility that comes with leadership. That is why I stand with any initiative that seeks to elevate governance above politics of division. Governor Seyi Makinde’s declaration and the PDP-APM alliance represent that path,” he said.

He called on members of the PDP, APM, civil society organizations, traditional institutions, youth groups, and the media to rally behind the alliance and ensure that the message of unity and competence reaches every ward and polling unit across the country.

Otunba Oluseye Nathaniel Oladosu Opatoki concluded his statement by expressing optimism that the 2027 elections would mark a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic journey. He said the combination of Governor Makinde’s experience as a two-term governor and his vision for national renewal provides Nigerians with a credible option for the presidency.

“This is a moment for all of us who believe in Nigeria’s potential to stand up and be counted. I congratulate Governor Seyi Makinde once again and commend the leadership of both the PDP and the APM for choosing the path of unity. The work ahead is significant, but with collective effort, a historic reset is possible in 2027,” he said.
