Under the visionary leadership of Governor Engineer Seyi Makinde, Oyo State is undergoing a transformative agribusiness revolution, cementing its position as one of Nigeria’s leading agricultural hubs. The Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA) has been instrumental in driving this growth, translating policy into tangible outcomes and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.

Speaking on the progress made, Dr. Debo Akande, Director-General of OYSADA, highlighted the remarkable strides achieved under Governor Makinde’s leadership. “Agbusiness has moved from policy aspiration to practical delivery,” Dr. Akande noted, citing the establishment of 16 new agro-industrial factories between 2019 and today. One cassava processing company alone supports over 3,000 farmers, providing income security and stability.

The Esai sugarcane processing factory is another notable example, working directly with nearly 1,000 farmers and reinforcing the state’s commitment to a demand-driven agricultural model. “Our strategy is simple but effective,” Dr. Akande explained. “We deliberately site industries across different regions of the state, allowing them to drive agricultural production. Government provides the enabling resources, infrastructure, and policy support, while farmers and investors focus on productivity and value creation.”

This approach has helped Oyo State build a resilient and well-structured agricultural system, anchored on sustainability, processing capacity, and market access. The Oyo State Agribusiness Development Strategy, developed after hosting the first international agribusiness stakeholders meeting, has guided this progress.

The impact is evident across the state. At Oyo Sugar and Derivatives Industries Limited, Chairman Olusola Adepoju recounted how timely government intervention revived a stalled project, now a major industrial employer. “When funding challenges threatened the completion of this factory, the state government stepped in. Today, we are set to produce between 24 and 27 tons of brown sugar daily, alongside 18 metric tons of molasses, with plans to scale up capacity to process 1,000 metric tons of sugarcane per day.”

Modern livestock and dairy operations, such as Milkin Barn, are redefining best practices in animal husbandry. The facility integrates feed production, controlled housing, artificial insemination, and milk processing, producing up to 15,000 liters of milk daily.

Local manufacturing has also received a boost, with Niji Group designing and fabricating tractors, harvesters, cassava peelers, and food processing machines that meet European standards. The African Agricultural Technology Foundation has supported innovations addressing post-harvest losses, allowing farmers to store processed chips for up to six months.

Infrastructure development has strengthened agribusiness operations, with improved road networks linking farms, factories, and markets, reducing logistics costs. Tunde Awoyoola, Managing Director of Nutslink Limited, praised the government’s responsiveness. “The Governor visited, saw the challenges firsthand, and fixed the road without drama. That intervention made a real difference to our operations.”

For Ayodeji Alayande, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Farmix Investment Limited, the results are clear. “Agriculture has been repositioned into a modern engine of inclusive economic growth. Industrialization is no longer a theory here. It is visible and working.”

Dr. Akande revealed that Oyo State’s agribusiness model has attracted international attention, with investors and foreign leaders visiting to study the success story. “Our partners in the private sector will attest to one thing: in Oyo State, agreements are respected, laws are honored, and investments are protected. That credibility is our strongest asset.”

As Oyo State continues to build on these gains, its agribusiness journey stands as a compelling example of how clear strategy, capable institutions, and effective leadership can unlock sustainable development. Governor Makinde’s commitment to agribusiness development has created a thriving ecosystem, empowering farmers, investors, and communities.

The future looks bright for Oyo State, with agribusiness poised to drive economic growth, food security, and prosperity. As Dr. Akande noted, “Oyo State is on the move, and agribusiness is the engine driving this transformation.”

With its innovative approach and commitment to excellence, Oyo State is set to become a leading player in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. Governor Makinde’s vision and leadership have created a platform for sustainable growth, and OYSADA’s efforts are ensuring that this growth is inclusive and equitable.

As the state continues to attract investment and drive innovation, Oyo State’s agribusiness sector is poised to make a significant contribution to Nigeria’s economic development. With its strong foundation and commitment to excellence, Oyo State is on the path to becoming a model for agribusiness development in Africa.

The success story of Oyo State’s agribusiness revolution is a testament to the power of effective governance and strategic planning. Governor Makinde’s leadership has created a conducive environment for businesses to thrive, and OYSADA’s efforts are ensuring that this growth benefits all stakeholders.
