Veteran journalist and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Chief Dele Momodu, has praised the newly crowned Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Ladoja, for his patience and resilience, while also highlighting the uniqueness of Ibadan’s traditional succession system.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Momodu reflected on his longstanding relationship with the new monarch, noting that their friendship spans over three decades. He described Ladoja’s emergence as a testament to perseverance, given the complexities of Ibadan’s rotational chieftaincy system, which often requires potential kings to wait many years before ascending the throne.

Momodu acknowledged that although Ibadan’s system is well-structured and minimizes succession disputes, the lengthy waiting period can lead to doubts, even among close associates. He admitted that at one point, he too questioned whether Ladoja would eventually wear the crown.
However, he said Ladoja remained composed throughout the process, trusting in the order and tradition of the system.
He contrasted Ibadan’s orderly model with other regions in Nigeria, where leadership tussles and legal battles often disrupt royal succession. According to him, the Ibadan system’s transparency and predictability help prevent conflict and confusion, making it a model worth emulating.

Following Ladoja’s coronation, Momodu recounted a personal moment with the new Olubadan, during which he expressed admiration for the monarch’s steadfastness. He told Ladoja, “Slow and steady wins the race,” describing him as a figure of patience, grace, and discipline.
Ladoja’s rise to the throne, after a distinguished career in politics and business, has been widely celebrated across Ibadanland. For Momodu, it is a powerful example of how integrity and perseverance can eventually triumph within a system rooted in tradition and order.
