In a candid interview, Colonel Olayinka Adeyanju, Commandant of Oyo State Amotekun Corps, shared valuable insights into the security challenges facing the state and the strategies being employed to combat them. With a wealth of experience in security operations, Colonel Adeyanju provided a detailed account of the efforts being made to tackle insecurity in Oyo State.

The Amotekun Commandant revealed that the corps had been tracking a notorious group of kidnappers who operated along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in 2022, kidnapping Professor Agbaje. According to him, the kidnappers were based in Lafiaje and had a hideout in Gambari Forest, around the Kwara and Oyo state border. The Amotekun Corps trailed them and recovered their weapons from a cave in the forest, although the kidnappers themselves were not apprehended at the time.

Colonel Adeyanju noted that the efforts of the Amotekun Corps led to a significant reduction in kidnapping incidents along the expressway. He also revealed that the military was now operating in the area, and the Amotekun Corps had placed its men as a blocking force to prevent any potential threats from entering Oyo State. So far, there have been no incidents, and this collaboration is expected to yield positive results in tackling insecurity.

The Commandant also addressed the issue of the boundary dispute between Oyo and Osun States, stating that it was beyond his purview. He explained that the deputy governors of both states were meeting to discuss the issue, and he provided security information and support as needed. According to him, as Amotekun Commandant, his jurisdiction is limited to Oyo State, and if incidents occur in Osun, he hands over to the police, who have federal jurisdiction.

Regarding the viral video claiming Boko Haram’s presence in Oyo State, Colonel Adeyanju dismissed it as a lie. He explained that the video was old, from 2022, and was likely used for nefarious purposes. The Commandant emphasized that such misinformation can harm the state’s economy and investor confidence, and those responsible should face prosecution without option of fine if caught.
