The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Enugu State has criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu over what it described as persistent failures in Nigeria’s electricity sector.

This is just as a former Minister of Power, Barth Nnaji, joined the opposition party in Enugu on Sunday.

The Enugu chapter of the ADC announced Nnaji’s entry into the party in a release on Sunday, saying it was a boost to oust the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.

The statement was signed by Ani Chukwuma on behalf of the Enugu ADC Media Team.

The ADC said, “We are aware that the Federal Government and the South East governors made overtures to Professor Nnaji to use his ground-breaking Geometric Power Plant in Aba to power the five states of Nigeria to sell the dummy to the Nigerian public that the Tinubu administration has succeeded in the power sector, but he rejected the offer,” the party said.

The Enugu ADC said it considered the move by the former minister as an act of patriotism and courage.

The party also criticised the federal government’s handling of electricity supply nearly three years into Tinubu’s administration.

It recalled that during the 2023 presidential campaign, Tinubu had promised to transform Nigeria’s electricity sector and ensure stable power supply.

The party quoted the president as having asked voters not to re-elect him if he failed to deliver reliable electricity, including a commitment to provide 24-hour power supply and end estimated billing.

However, the ADC said the situation had not improved, arguing that Nigerians across the country were still struggling with unstable electricity.

“The national grid continues to experience frequent collapses, with at least 12 reported in 2025 and multiple collapses in January 2026.
“Nigerian households and businesses have been suffering from the effect of worsening electricity supply, and in some cases, total blackout.

“The story is the same in Kano, Enugu, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Lagos, Ogun and indeed every part of Nigeria.
“Many people have resorted to generators and solar power to survive, while those who cannot afford alternative sources of energy are passing through harrowing times,” the party said.
The opposition party expressed optimism that the entry of Nnaji, a power sector expert and founder of the Geometric Power project in Aba, would strengthen its policy direction on electricity reform.

It added that individuals with technical expertise like the former minister would help develop a roadmap to address Nigeria’s longstanding electricity challenges if the party wins power in 2027.

“However, all these sufferings will end as soon as ADC becomes the ruling party in 2027, because we have competent persons like Professor Barth Nnaji to prepare and implement a road map for systematically addressing the challenges in the power sector,” the party stated.
