A devastating attack was launched by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on the Chibok community in Borno State, leaving at least seven residents dead and several others injured. The attack occurred on Monday evening, when the terrorists stormed the Kopl village in the Chibok Local Government Area, opening fire on villagers who had gathered to observe the final funeral rites of a deceased resident.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many residents living in fear of further attacks. The Chairman of Chibok LGA, Hon. Modu Mustaph, confirmed the incident and revealed that the actual death toll may exceed initial reports. “Many of the victims who sustained injuries were immediately evacuated to Mubi General Hospital in Adamawa State for treatment,” Mustaph said. “We fear the casualty figure could rise as local volunteers continue search and rescue efforts. A mass burial is being planned for Tuesday.”

This latest attack is a grim reminder of the persistent threat Boko Haram poses to the region, despite government claims of progress in the war against insurgency. The terrorists seem to be regrouping and launching fresh attacks, leaving innocent civilians to bear the brunt of their violence.

The attack on Kopl village is not an isolated incident. Just hours before, another deadly incident was reported along the Gamboru Ngala-Kala Balge road, where several motorists and passengers were killed after their vehicles ran over improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by the terrorists. Dozens were severely injured in the incident, highlighting the growing concern over the safety of road users in the region.

Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, who represents the region in the National Assembly, has decried the deteriorating security situation and called for urgent intervention from the federal government. “The situation is pathetic and beyond human imagination,” Ndume stated. “Even yesterday, I got a distress call that over ten vigilante members were killed in a community between Hawul and Garkida in Adamawa.”

Ndume revealed that the people of the region are suffering mass casualties without confrontation, with over a hundred people killed in coordinated attacks across various communities in the past month. “My people are suffering, and something needs to be done urgently,” he emphasized.

The latest attacks have left residents of Kopl and neighboring villages living in fear, with many families fleeing to nearby towns and IDP camps for safety. The internally displaced persons (IDP) camps are already overcrowded, and the influx of more people will only exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.

The federal government needs to take immediate action to address the security situation in the North-East. The people of the region are crying out for help, and it is the government’s responsibility to protect them. The government must deploy more troops to the region and provide adequate support to the military to enable them to effectively combat the insurgents.

Furthermore, the government needs to address the root causes of the insurgency, such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to education. The people of the North-East need economic opportunities and access to basic services to rebuild their lives.

In conclusion, the Boko Haram attack on Kopl village is a stark reminder of the persistent threat the terrorist group poses to the region. The government needs to take immediate action to address the security situation and provide support to the affected communities. The people of the North-East deserve to live in peace and security, and it is the government’s responsibility to ensure their safety.
