The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has sparked controversy by labeling social media a “terrorist organization” due to its role in spreading false information and inciting unrest. He made this statement during the 7th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The Sultan urged security agencies to take decisive action against social media platforms, citing their potential to formulate and disseminate false stories that can be considered true. “Social media is one terrorist organization. Somebody can sit in the comfort of their home and formulate stories, and you will consider that it is true,” he said.

Beyond social media, the Sultan expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence and killings in Plateau and other parts of the country. He condemned the repeated attacks, calling on political leaders and security agencies to take urgent and practical steps to end the bloodshed. As the leader of over 86 traditional rulers in the North, he emphasized the need for collective action to address insecurity.

“We will speak with one voice to say ‘enough is enough’ of this senseless killing of innocent people across the North and the country,” he declared. The Sultan criticized the cycle of issuing condemnation statements without tangible results, stressing that traditional rulers feel bad and saddened when their people are killed by unknown assailants.

The Sultan’s concerns highlight the need for collaborative efforts to advise and work with political leaders to stem the violence. By speaking out, he aims to bring attention to the plight of the people affected by the ongoing violence and to push for meaningful action.
