Benue Communities Under Siege: Suspected Herdsmen Take Over Ukum Local Government Area

Reports are emerging of a dire security situation in Benue State, Nigeria, where suspected Fulani herdsmen have taken over several communities in the Ukum Local Government Area. According to eyewitnesses, approximately 600 armed men stormed the area around 4:15 pm on Thursday, wielding AK-47 rifles.

A resident, speaking to SaharaReporters, expressed fear for their lives, stating, “Our lives are in danger this evening, armed Fulani herdsmen, about 600 in numbers have taken over our communities this evening.” The resident added that the herdsmen are currently moving around towns in the Ukum Local Government Area, with no security personnel in sight.

The lack of security presence has raised concerns, with the resident noting that Governor Alia didn’t deploy security personnel, allegedly stating that operations would commence once the herders have observed the area. This development has sparked panic among residents, who are worried about their safety.

This incident is part of a larger pattern of escalating violence in Benue State, where suspected herdsmen have been launching deadly attacks on communities. Just a day before this incident, 11 people were killed in a raid on the Otobi community. On Wednesday, suspected herdsmen attacked three communities in Otukpo Local Government Area, specifically targeting Emichi, Odudaje, and Okpamaju.

The attacks have resulted in a significant displacement of residents, with many seeking safety in other areas. The humanitarian situation is becoming increasingly dire, with concerns about access to basic necessities like food, shelter, and healthcare.
