The Alaafin-elect of Oyo, Prince Akeem Owoade, and renowned Yoruba activist Sunday Igboho, have responded to the criticism levied by the Yoruba Muslims for Freedom (YMF) against the traditional curfew imposed in Oyo town. The curfew, which commenced on March 7, 2025, and will run until March 29, 2025, is an integral part of the “Oro Ipebi” cultural practice observed during the installation of a new Alaafin.

The traditional curfew, initially restricting movement from 8 PM to 6 AM, aims to ensure the secrecy of the monarch’s installation. However, considering the coincidence with Ramadan, the Oyo monarch adjusted the curfew hours from 10 PM to 6 AM to accommodate Muslim prayers. Despite this accommodation, the YMF criticized the curfew, labeling it a violation of the people’s rights and accusing Prince Owoade of overstepping his authority. Furthermore, they referred to traditional rulers as “idol worshippers”.

In response, Sunday Igboho condemned the criticism, describing the attack on the Alaafin-elect as divisive and disrespectful. Igboho emphasized the importance of respecting Yoruba cultural practices, stating, “If you try to disrespect our traditional institutions, you are only sowing the seeds of division in the community.” He also noted that such actions threaten to undermine both the region’s cultural heritage and its social cohesion.

Prince Owoade, who recently arrived from Canada to begin his seclusion rites, has called for restraint and respect for traditional leaders. He urged the public not to allow actions that could harm the unity of the Yoruba people. Both Owoade and Igboho have reiterated the importance of preserving the balance between tradition, religion, and social unity in the region.

Prince Akeem Owoade, a distinguished Nigerian-Canadian entrepreneur, philanthropist, and project management expert, was formally approved by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State as the new Alaafin of Oyo. His appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for Oyo, blending tradition with innovation under the leadership of a globally experienced and culturally conscious monarch.
