Technology has become an indispensable part of our lives. It has a highly manifesting impacts that is felt across the globe, it has transformed the way we live, work, and interact with one another. Technology has been a groundbreaker in various aspects, including governance, democratic aspirations, and even connectivity. It has enabled governments to become more transparent and accountable, facilitated seamless communication between citizens and leaders, and connected people from diverse backgrounds and geographical locations.
Many African societies have historically lived without the benefits of technology or significant exposure to its potential. However, I think this narrative is rapidly changing. The rebirth and transformation is evident, with many African societies now embracing technology and its numerous benefits. Despite this progress, I feel there is still a significant digital divide. Many people lack access to reliable internet services for a number of obvious reasons, which hinders their ability to connect with the global community and tap into the vast wealth of knowledge available online.
It is in response to this digital divide that initiatives like the AKK House is emerging. It is scheduled to be unveiled this year 2025, – the House is a multifaceted building designed to serve various purposes for fellow Oyo state people, and contribute to the needs of our state in general. Notably, a section of the building will provide free internet accessibility to our local community, and bridge the gap in internet access and promotion of digital inclusivity. This scheme is particularly significant, given the high cost of data services, which can be a substantial burden for individuals who are not ordinarily earning enough.
In advanced democracies, free internet access is often taken for granted. Many local communities have ICT/internet points and areas where people can access internet services for free. This has numerous benefits, including access to information, opportunities for study and research, and the ability to stay informed about global events. The bold AKK House project aims to replicate these benefits in Oyo state, and I have no doubt in its ability to deliver on its vision.
As well, the AKK House is designed to be a multipurpose facility, with a library accompanying the internet hub. This combination will stimulate internet use and promote a culture of reading and learning. The library will provide young people and local schools with access to books, educational resources, and a conducive environment for study and research. With the availability of these resources, the broader goal aims to address the needs of our respective communities and promote digital literacy in Oyo state.
I so strongly believe that this development is a step toward creating a more serving and delivering world for the Oyo State people. It is a further demonstration of the fact that the presence of commitment and vision can create a world that gives everyone access to the resources they need to find purpose and develop at a scale never seen before.
