Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly and the Chairman of The Conference of Speakers, Nigeria, Rt. Hon Adebo Edward Ogundoyin has called for a compelling need to adopt the holistic legislative approach in addressing issues relating to nutrition and food security in Nigeria.
Hon Ogundoyin made this assertions while speaking at the opening ceremony of of a 3 day retreat organized by the House of representatives committee on Nutrition and Food Security.
The retreat which was titled “Galvanizing Legislative Agenda for Nutrition and Food Security in Nigeria” saw the Oyo speaker lead other state assembly speakers.
The Chairman of the Conference of Speakers in his address acknowledged that in Nigeria, access to affordable and nutritious food is still a grave concern which has led to malnutrition and many other health-related issues, especially among the vulnerable population.
He further stressed that this could impair children’s cognitive development and learning abilities which in the long run may lead to raising a society of malnourished individuals thereby undermining the progress of the country.
Hon Ogundoyin however gave the assurance that as major stakeholders, the conference of speakers would champion policies and initiatives that promote nutrition and food security in their various states.
The Oyo speaker also applauded the House of Representative speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass for creating a specific committee on Nutrition and Food Security with a promise that the Oyo State House of Assembly would be among the first to replicate the committee.
