Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has expressed his hope that God will provide the country with a leader with a “good heart” in 2023, similar to President Muhammadu Buhari.
In May 2023, Buhari’s second term will come to an end. Politicking for his seat has already reached a fever pitch, with top officials from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) vying for it. Umahi expressed his wish during a press conference following a visit to President Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.
The governor, on the other hand, said it was too early to get involved in 2023 politics, calling it a distraction for the president and state governors. He claimed that members of various South East political parties were working together to ensure that the parties’ presidential nominations were granted to the region.
“Well, for me, I’m very much entrenched in completing my projects,” he said when asked if South East leaders were working to get the major political parties to zone the presidency to their region. And when my one-year term ends on May 29, 2022, I’ll look into politics. I believe the same is true for other governors in the South East, and by extension, governors in the APC.
“In response to your question, my position is that our people in those political parties are working hard to sell the need for the South East to produce the next president. “However, I believe both the governors and Mr. President should remain focused. It should be governance after the election is conducted and won. However, in this country, the moment one election is over, the next one begins, and the people are cheated.
“Those whose occupation is politics and who are not in elected or appointed positions have unlimited time and opportunity to canvass. And I believe they are doing so, and they are doing it well.
“However, I continue to believe that power is in God’s hands. And, for the sake of this country, God will also provide us with the next president, who, like President Buhari, has a good heart. “For the sake of the country’s interests and unity, we need God’s anointing for our own anointed president.” Meanwhile, Gody Jedy-Agba, the minister of state for power, has urged the people of his immediate communities in Cross River State’s Obudu LGA to pray fervently for and support Buhari’s administration’s success. He said the president understands what Nigerians are going through and is working hard to alleviate their suffering.
“I am a minister today because of President Muhammadu Buhari,” Jedy-Agba said when they bestowed chieftaincy titles on him and his wife yesterday. So, as I’ve seen, if you love and support me, you must also love and support the president.
“We are aware of the challenges confronting Nigerians, and I can assure you that the president is not dozing off. He is working nonstop to restore Nigeria’s greatness.”
