The Governor of Oyo State, Engr Seyi Makinde has said that the students of public primary and secondary school students in the state would not be given the subsequent long vacation, sequel to outbreak and prevalent spread of coronavirus pandemic that triggered the closure of schools and partial lockdown across the state.
Makinde made the disclosure while delivering his speech at the low key celebration of workers’ day held in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
He said that the schools across the state would be opened on July 15th and the students would spend the remaining two weeks meant for not yet completed second term.
Makinde added that the parents and guardians should note that there would be no subsequent long vacation for the students as they need to proceed for third term academic session immediately after the completion of second term.
He however asserted that he is not the smartest person, calling on all labour unions to support him with arguable, progressive and developmental policies and programmes that would move the governance to enviable heights.
On diversification of economy, Makinde disclosed that concerted efforts and commitment would be concentrated on agricultural sector where food security would be given the needed priority, adding that efforts would be placed on conversion of Eruwa and Akufo Farm settlements to Estate while others like Ijaye, Fashola and Iresaadu would be worked on in the mean time.
On effective use of raining season, Makinde said that South West Governors’ Forum had meeting with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s(CBN) Deputy Governor where he confided in them on funds they could tap in for agricultural business, adding that he had instructed the Special Assistant on Agric Business to work on ten hectares of land across the five geopolitical zones in the state for planting of crops. stressing that he was committed to building of strong economy in the state.
On those working to cause friction between him and his deputy governor, he warned them to desist from such as the cabinet is one for attainment of desired goals.
In another development, Prince Adedoyin Tojuade, NUT Chairman stated that it was no doubt that the low key celebration of this year’s workers’ days was as a result of coronavirus pandemic, stressing that winning against the contagious disease was a collective and unanimous togetherness. Calling on workers to be more diligent, submissive to work after the pandemic.
While presenting Award of ‘LABOUR FRIENDLY GOVERNOR’ to governor Seyi Makinde, Comrade Titilola Sodo, NLC Chairman said governor makinde deserves more than the award presented to him because he’s now talk in town governor for his pro-activeness in handle things general. He is not a copy and paste governor but someone that always uses his brain before doing anything.
Further said that there would be hardship after covid-19 but optimistic that Oyo State would not fall among the states which would experience such, adding that people of Oyo State should adhere strictly to WHO’s protocols on fight against coronavirus pandemic.
Olusegun Abatan, Secreatry, Nigerian Union of Pensioners, Oyo State thanked the governor for his humility to attend the low key celebration of workers’ day caused by covid-19, stressing that governor’s demonstration of humility showed that he wants to serve the people of the state.
Abatan called on all and sundry to comply with governments’ directives and adequately ensure precautionary and hygienic measures against the deadly disease.
The workers’ day celebration was attended by Oyo State governor himself, Engr Seyi Makinde, His Deputy, Engr Remi Olaniyan, Chief of Staff, Oyebisi Ilaka, SSG, Labour leaders and host of others.
