As the 2027 presidential election draws near, political alliances and endorsements are becoming increasingly significant. In a recent development, Ibadan-based politician and seasoned statesman, Alhaji Adebisi Aremu Olopoeyan, has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Governor Seyi Makinde’s potential presidential bid in 2027. Olopoeyan, a former leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), emphasized that his loyalty lies with Makinde, who he believes is the best candidate for the presidency.

When asked about his stance on Makinde’s presidential ambition, Olopoeyan clarified that although the governor has not officially informed him of his intentions, he would wholeheartedly support him if he decides to run. “Seyi Makinde is yet to inform me that he wants to contest for President in 2027. But if he decides to contest for President, he is the one I will support because I don’t know any other President,” Olopoeyan stated.

“People claimed to have seen me sitting with President Tinubu in a private room during his 2023 campaign visit to Oyo State. Do I have access to him now? No, that’s a privilege reserved for him and his inner circle. However, if Governor Seyi Makinde were to assume the presidency, I could confidently take people along with me and inform the President that we would be visiting Aso Rock the following day, with unrestricted access. It’s all about who you have a connection with.

If Seyi Makinde were to announce his presidential ambitions tomorrow, I would wholeheartedly support him and work tirelessly for his success. After all, those who occupy the corridors of power in Abuja are individuals like us.”

Olopoeyan’s endorsement of Makinde’s potential presidential bid is significant, given his influence in Oyo State politics. He also acknowledged that his relationship with Makinde has improved, following a period of crisis between them. “Everybody in any party knows that once you have a Governor in any party, the Governor is the leader of the Party. Though, what I said then was right, but it was the Governor who finally settled the crisis between me and him. Nobody settled it for us,” Olopoeyan explained.

Furthermore, Olopoeyan expressed his skepticism about the chances of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State come 2027. “What determines election is the Candidate you present, the party itself, and the people that will support him. Election does not win on social media, Radio, or Television. You can say whatever you like on those means of communications, but when election is being counted, that is when you will know where you belong to,” he noted.

As the 2027 presidential election approaches, Olopoeyan’s endorsement of Makinde’s potential candidacy is a significant development in Oyo State politics. With his influence and experience, Olopoeyan’s support could be a major boost to Makinde’s presidential ambitions.
