The Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) has convened an emergency meeting to address the ongoing leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly. The meeting, scheduled to take place at Lagos House Marina, the official residence of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, aims to resolve the controversy surrounding the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Obasa was ousted in absentia by 32 out of 40 Assembly members on January 13, 2025, over allegations of financial misconduct, high-handedness, and abuse of office. His deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was subsequently appointed as the new Speaker. However, the removal has sparked divisions within the GAC and the APC, with conflicting views from party leaders.
Some members, such as Senator Anthony Adefuye, have described Obasa’s removal as illegal, while others, including Musiliu Obanikoro, have dismissed such claims. GAC member Muraina Taiwo has also criticized the Assembly for reconvening during recess to execute the removal.
As the highest decision-making body in Lagos APC, the GAC’s resolutions are binding on party members. The council is chaired by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, with President Bola Tinubu serving as a lifetime patron. With tensions rising, today’s meeting is expected to play a crucial role in determining Obasa’s fate and restoring stability within the party.
GAC Secretary, Mutiu Are, has downplayed the crisis, calling it a “family affair” that will be resolved internally. However, the meeting’s outcome will be closely watched, as it may have significant implications for the party’s future.
The emergency meeting comes just two weeks after a similar gathering at the same venue, highlighting the urgency of the situation. As the APC seeks to resolve its internal conflicts, the meeting’s outcome will be crucial in shaping the party’s direction and restoring unity among its members.
