Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, representing Ondo South in the national assembly, has revealed that several governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition parties are planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general election. Ibrahim made this statement while responding to questions on Channels Television, citing the influx of new members from the PDP as a significant development for the APC.

According to Ibrahim, many people have already decamped to the party, with more expected to join in the coming weeks. He pointed out that despite criticism of APC policies by its own members, the focus should also be on the new members joining the party. Ibrahim specifically mentioned Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who despite being a PDP member, is serving in the APC government.

Ibrahim hinted that several governors are planning to join the APC but declined to mention names to avoid embarrassing them. However, there have been allegations that some PDP governors, including Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Peter Mbah of Enugu, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, and Ademola Adeleke of Osun, are planning to dump the party for the APC. These governors, all first-term governors, are allegedly scared of President Bola Tinubu using federal might to stop their second-term ambitions. However, all of them have previously denied the allegations, vowing to remain with the opposition PDP.

The APC has a history of attracting defectors from the PDP, with several governors and lawmakers switching parties in recent years. The party’s ability to woo defectors has been a significant factor in its electoral successes, including its victory in the 2023 presidential election. As the 2027 general election approaches, it remains to be seen whether the APC can continue to attract defectors and maintain its electoral momentum.
