A devastating accident occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday, resulting in the loss of one life and leaving another person severely injured. The incident happened around 2 p.m. at Osuntokun Junction, opposite Zenith Bank, when a speeding black Mercedes saloon car rammed into a pharmacy store.
According to eyewitnesses, the Mercedes was traveling at a high speed when it crossed the Bodija-UI main road from Osuntokun Avenue before crashing into the pharmacy near Grandex Stores. The impact of the collision was severe, causing significant damage to the pharmacy and two parked vehicles belonging to customers.
Tragically, an unidentified motorcycle (okada) rider was killed instantly in the accident. The rider was dropping off a passenger at the pharmacy when the Mercedes crashed into the store. The driver of the Mercedes sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH) for treatment.
Emergency responders were quickly deployed to the scene, and the okada rider’s body was recovered from the shop and taken to the UCH morgue. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many residents expressing concern about the reckless driving habits of some motorists in the area.
Efforts to reach the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were unsuccessful, as they promised to provide details later. The FRSC has been working to reduce the number of accidents on Nigerian roads, but incidents like this highlight the need for continued vigilance and enforcement of traffic laws.
The incident has also raised questions about the safety of okada riders and passengers in Ibadan. Okada riders are a common sight on Nigerian roads, but they are often vulnerable to accidents due to the lack of safety measures and enforcement of traffic laws.
As the investigation into the accident continues, residents of Ibadan are calling for greater awareness and enforcement of traffic laws to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
