Dr. Bisi Onasanya, former Group Managing Director of FirstBank, has vehemently denied allegations of involvement in a commercial loan transaction dating back 12 years. In a statement issued by his communication advisor, Mr. Michael Oshunuyi, Onasanya described the claims as unfounded and an attempt to tarnish his reputation.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently filed charges against Onasanya and three others at the Federal High Court in Lagos for allegedly obtaining a N30bn loan under false pretenses. The case involves Oba Otudeko, former chairman of First Bank; Soji Akintayo, an ex-board member of Honeywell Flour Mills Plc; and Anchorage Limited, linked to Otudeko.
Onasanya refuted these claims, stating that the matter had been investigated eight years ago, two years after his retirement, and he was exonerated of any wrongdoing. “Our attention has been drawn to allegations and a charge sheet circulating on social media suggesting Dr. Bisi Onasanya’s involvement in a purported commercial loan controversy at First Bank 12 years ago,” Oshunuyi said. “While we have consistently ignored such baseless attacks, growing concern from family, friends, and associates compels us to address these unfounded claims.”
Onasanya emphasized that he has not received any official summons or notification from the court or investigative agencies and remains available to defend his reputation if required. Similarly, Oba Otudeko denied the allegations, asserting his readiness to cooperate with any government agency to resolve the matter. He clarified that he has no interest in holding executive or non-executive roles outside his current positions.
Both men underscored the importance of accurate reporting, urging the media to verify claims to avoid the spread of false information. They emphasized that the allegations are not only unfounded but also malicious, and they are confident that the truth will prevail in the end.
