The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of eight individuals in connection with a tragic stampede that occurred at the Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan, on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. The incident, which was meant to be a funfair organized by the Wings Foundation in partnership with Agidigbo FM, turned into a nightmare when the crowd became uncontrollable, resulting in the deaths of 35 minors.
According to the Oyo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, the arrested individuals include Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the 31-year-old primary sponsor of the event and former wife of the Ooni of Ife, alongside several other key figures involved in organizing and overseeing the event.
The arrested individuals are facing various charges linked to the tragedy, which has left six others critically injured. The injured children are receiving medical care at local hospitals.
In a statement, the Oyo State Police Command assured that the investigation into the incident is being treated with the utmost seriousness. The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Iyaganku for further investigation, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police personally overseeing the matter.
The police have extended their condolences to the families affected by the incident and pledged to pursue justice for the victims. Authorities have also deployed additional police presence and heightened patrols in the affected areas to prevent further unrest or exploitation by criminal elements.
