He emphasized the importance of press freedom and protection for those in the profession, particularly in light of the alarming number of journalists killed or harassed while pursuing truth.
The United Nations designated November 2 as a special day to condemn attacks on journalists and media workers, honoring the journalists who have paid the ultimate price in their line of duty since 2013 ¹. Dr. Kareem expressed displeasure at the mistreatment of journalists and solemnly remembered those who lost their lives pursuing truth.
Journalists face countless threats, including kidnapping, torture, physical attacks, and digital harassment, creating a climate of fear that impedes the free circulation of information and ideas ¹. This issue is particularly pressing, with UNESCO reporting that 86% of journalist killings remain unsolved, perpetuating a culture of impunity.
Dr. Kareem urged authorities to ensure journalist safety and hold perpetrators accountable. He also encouraged journalists to maintain professionalism and diplomacy in their work. The global commemoration of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists will take place on November 6-7, 2024, at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, focusing on Safety of Journalists in Crises and Emergencies. 9 out of 10 journalist killings remain unsolved. 86% global impunity rate for crimes against journalists. 11% of women among all journalists killed in 2021.
