In an unprecedented display of support, thousands of people from all walks of life gathered at the Ilaji Hotels & Sports Resort on September 3, 2024, to urge Ibadan billionaire, Chief Jubril Dotun Sanusi, to contest for the Oyo State governorship seat in 2027. The event, which was attended by various associations, political groups, artisans, pensioners, friends, and associates, demonstrated the widespread support for Sanusi’s candidacy.

Speakers from different associations praised Sanusi’s contributions to the socio-economic and political development of Oyo State, citing his capability to manage public funds for the benefit of the people. The associations, including widows, public speakers, patent medicine dealers, welders, and goldsmiths, among others, declared their unwavering support for Sanusi’s governorship bid.

Chief Waheed Adurodekun, a prominent political leader and PDP chieftain, encouraged the gathering to promote Sanusi’s candidacy, emphasizing his potential to transform Oyo State. Adurodekun noted that Sanusi’s philanthropic efforts and business acumen make him an ideal candidate to lead the state.

A register booklet was distributed to collect data on supporters, with assurances that those who contribute to the project will benefit from good governance and leadership under Sanusi. The gesture was seen as a commitment to transparency and accountability, hallmarks of Sanusi’s leadership style.

Sanusi, who expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support, revealed that he had initially sought another candidate to succeed Governor Makinde but was convinced by the people to contest himself. He pledged to prioritize the welfare of the people, citing his philanthropic gestures as evidence of his commitment to service.

The Ibadan billionaire also shared a heartwarming experience with the gathering, recounting how Baales in Ibadan had contributed money from their pockets to support his governorship bid. Sanusi stated that the gesture had moved him to tears and reinforced his conviction to serve the people.

Sanusi also stated that he is currently not a member of any political party and will join the one that offers him its governorship ticket, with the decision of his supporters being paramount. This statement was met with chants of “PDP! PDP!” from the crowd, indicating their preference for the party.

The event marked a significant milestone in Oyo State politics, with Sanusi’s name, “Ilaji,” becoming synonymous with good governance and leadership. As the crowd dispersed, it was clear that Sanusi’s candidacy had electrified the political space, inspiring hope for a brighter future in Oyo State.
