Associates of the Ibadan-born billionaire businessman and Chairman of Ilaji Resorts and Hotel, Dotun Sanusi, are pushing for him to contest the Oyo State governorship in 2027 under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite Sanusi’s lack of affiliation with any political party, indications suggest that both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are interested in having him join the contest.
Sanusi, known for his philanthropic efforts and support for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Seyi Makinde in the 2023 general election, has expressed concerns over the increasing pressure from supporters. He emphasized that his future is in God’s hands and his service to humanity will continue regardless of political ambitions.
However, those pushing for Sanusi’s candidacy argue that he has become a rallying point for the people due to his significant contributions to the state. They highlight his investments in the South-South states of Rivers and Akwa-Ibom, as well as his establishment of ventures in Oyo State, including Ilaji Farms, Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resort, and Ilaji Football Clubs.
Despite Sanusi’s initial reluctance, his associates remain determined to persuade him to contest the governorship. They believe that his public-spirited nature and success in empowering the people of Oyo State make him an ideal candidate for the position.
As consultations continue, particularly with regards to the APC, it is expected that Sanusi’s associates will launch a more organized and visible campaign in the coming months. Whether Sanusi will eventually yield to the pressure remains to be seen, but his commitment to the greater good of the people is undeniable.
