As the political landscape in Oyo State begins to take shape ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election, one name continues to resonate more powerfully than others: Jubril Dotun Sanusi, the Otun-Apesinola of Ibadanland and Chairman of Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resort. His extraordinary contributions to the development of Oyo State have set him apart, earning him the admiration and support of key stakeholders and eminent personalities who believe he is the right candidate to sustain and expand on the legacy of Governor Seyi Makinde.

Governor Makinde recently highlighted a significant achievement that underscores the importance of continuity in leadership—Oyo State’s pursuit of energy sufficiency.

Speaking at the inauguration of transformers donated by Jubril Dotun Sanusi in Ona-Ara Local Government on 5th June 2023, the governor proudly stated that Oyo would be the first state in Nigeria to attain energy sufficiency, thanks in no small part to the groundwork laid by Sanusi’s selfless contributions.

On 5th June 2023, Governor Seyi Makinde posted the following statements on his social media handles, “This morning, we commissioned electrification projects executed by my brother, Engr Dotun Sanusi, the CEO of Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resort, in Idi-Obi, Jigan, Kure, Olorunda Ogunsola and environs in Ona-Ara LGA. Engr Sanusi’s magnanimity is commendable and key to our vision to make Oyo State energy sufficient under Omituntun 2.0.

“With the recent amendment of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, our administration is seeking to partner with private investors in the sustainable energy sector to meet the over 400MW deficit in our dear state.

“We have already created the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission to facilitate investments in the sector.”

Sanusi’s commitment to the betterment of his community is evident in his actions. His donation of 500KVA and 300KVA transformers to the Olorunda Ogunsola and Idi-Obi areas, respectively, is just one example of his impactful initiatives. These transformers now serve 15 communities, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy and quality of life for residents. In total, Sanusi has installed 15 transformers across various communities, a feat unmatched by any other potential candidate eyeing the Oyo State governorship.

Governor Makinde’s administration has embraced the new law allowing states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity, with a vision to make Oyo State the leader in energy sufficiency in Nigeria. This ambitious goal requires a leader with a proven track record of commitment to infrastructural development, community service, and innovative thinking—qualities that Sanusi has consistently demonstrated.

The importance of Sanusi’s contributions is further amplified by the fact that notable figures like Baba Amao, Chief Bayo Oyero, Oloye Jumoke Akinjide, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi (a former Commissioner for Finance under the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi), and Senator Teslim Folarin, all hail from these communities. Despite their political clout, it was Sanusi who took the initiative to restore electricity to these areas, using his personal resources to connect the communities to the national grid. His actions speak volumes about his dedication to the welfare of the people and his ability to get things done where others have fallen short.

Oyo State residents and political observers are now viewing Governor Makinde’s public acknowledgment of Sanusi’s efforts as a clear endorsement of his capabilities. They believe that if Oyo State is to achieve the governor’s vision of energy sufficiency and continue on the path of sustainable development, then Sanusi is the leader who can make it happen. His record of service, his strategic vision, and his ability to mobilize resources for the public good make him the ideal candidate to carry forward the torch of progress in Oyo State.

As the 2027 election approaches, the people of Oyo State are increasingly convinced that Jubril Dotun Sanusi is the leader they need to build on the achievements of the current administration and take the state to even greater heights.
