In a move to address the skyrocketing prices of food and commodities in Ile-Ife, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, has taken decisive action to ensure fair prices and protect traders and consumers alike. Through his chiefs, the monarch has canceled all market associations, empowering traders to sell at their own prices without coercion or fixed prices.
In a video message delivered by his chiefs, the Ooni also pegged the price of a portion of pepper at N100 to N200, effective immediately. Additionally, he warned traders selling foodstuffs at inflated prices, such as seven cups as a congo, to desist or face banishment from the town.
The monarch’s directives aim to promote a free market, encourage competition, and protect consumers from extortionate practices. By allowing traders to sell at their own prices, the Ooni seeks to create a more equitable market environment.
This move follows a similar decision by the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba (Dr) Gabriel Aromolaran, who banned trade unions and transport associations in Ilesa in May 2024, citing their negative impact on prices and extortionate practices.
The Ooni’s bold steps have been welcomed by traders and consumers alike, who hope to see a more balanced market that benefits all. By promoting fair prices and protecting traders and consumers, the Ooni of Ife demonstrates his commitment to the welfare of his people.
