Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has officially approved the appointment of Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakuleyin as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, following the recommendation of the Olubadan-in-Council. This development comes after a series of processes stipulated by the extant laws of the state regarding ascension to royal thrones.
The governor’s approval was contained in a memo signed on June 14, 2024, exercising his powers under Section 19 (Cap 28) Law of Oyo State 2000 as amended. In a statement by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Honourable Olusegun Olayiwola, Governor Makinde congratulated the new Olubadan, wishing him a successful tenure that will bring greater developments to Ibadanland and Oyo State.
This appointment follows the amendment of the Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration Laws by Governor Makinde and the House of Assembly in May 2023, enabling the governor to approve the appointment without needing to consult the Council of Chiefs. The successful review of the Oyo State Chiefs Law in 2023 has paved the way for the installation of the next Olubadan, with Oba Olakulehin set to be enthroned soon.
The development has been welcomed by the people of Ibadanland and Oyo State, who see the appointment as a significant milestone in the history of the state. The new Olubadan, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakuleyin, is expected to play a vital role in promoting the cultural heritage and traditions of Ibadanland, while also contributing to the development and progress of Oyo State.
